Never met the man but I feel I owe him a big thank you.

Not only for his son who gives us this site but for evidently setting the example of sharing his knowledge which has made us all so much the better for it.

I was very lucky to spend time with Charlie. We were set up across from each other at a Minnesota convention. During slow times we would talk, and of all things Trapping beaver.
At another convention I was struggling to set up a new tent,Charlie came over to give me a hand.
At another convention,I set up outside under my canopy ,This was after Charlies surgery and he didn't set up a booth at the convention. He asked if he could join me for the day in my booth. It was a great day. The weather and my company were as good as you could get.
The last time I saw Charlie,I said that I would catch up with him at the upcoming Missouri convention. That meeting was never to be,Charlie passed away just before the convention.
What a wonderful man he was.I miss him,but am thankful for the times we shared together.

Charles Dobbins was the reason I got into the modification business thru Tim Caven. Charlie was a wealth of knowledge and was willing to share that knowledge. A buddy of mine asked Charlie during a demo about trapping beaver when it gets cold and ice starts forming. What should a trapper do. Charlie replied. Turn your radiator south . grin Great tip for sure laugh

He was a great friend and great mentor for many years. When I was a young man he taught me a tremendous amount about trap modification, animals, and trapping. On a beautiful late summer day he made time to go on my trapline to educate me about animal movement, set locations, and specific sets. At the time, I knew that day was extremely special. I truly appreciated his expertise and wisdom. I most appreciated that he was willing to invest his time and effort in me. And as the decades have passed, I have helped young trappers as he taught me. Thank you Mr. Dobbins!

He and Jim Helfrich spent the night at my house. They came down to give a demo at our district rendezvous.
I have a news paper picture of Mr Charles and me talking trapping at some NTA convention.

The first time I met Charlie was at the PA Trappers Association at the South Mountains Fairgrounds in 1982 .It did not take long for me to realize he knew more about traps and trapping than i did .And he enjoyed teaching others what he knew . As he showed me some of the many adjustments he recommended for improving the holding power of traps while also making them more humane His quick lessons that day opened a new door for me into how to be a more efficient trapper Because of the improvements he was demonstrating I was able to catch more fur .And catching more fur was more fun .And catching more also meant more money when I sold my fur .His book Adjustment of Foothold Traps for Profit in one of the best trapping books i ever read. . I am fortune to have had the chance to speak to him at quite a few other conventions and trapping gettogethers during the following years .I did not know him well but he was who he said he was. A very humble man that changed the trapping world with his insights in to traps and trapping .I have spent a little time over the last dozen years talking to Paul about his Dad when I would see him at the various trapping conventions I attended .And because of this website Paul and his Dad have impacted the world of trapping in many ways Charlie had a way of making others feel like they where the most important person in the world when he was speaking to them .While I do not proclaim to know either of them well .I know I am better off having talked to and listened to both of them over the years

He wrote the most entertaining stories in the Old Trapper magazines back in the '80s and '90s he would write about his camping and trapping experiences. I read most of his books and learn a great deal. Thank you to him and Paul for this great forum.

Yep, I always enjoyed his articles he wrote in various magazines. I met him on several occasions at Pennsylvania Trappers Association conventions.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.
