Soil temp is what makes or breaks starting your garden.

I agree you need the right soil temp to get seeds to germinate and plants to grow and not all are the same. Warm and cool season plants need different temps establish roots, grow and begin to seed. Cool season are peas, lettuce, radish, arugula, spinach, kale, cabbage typically leafy plants. Warm season are tomato's, peppers, beans, okra Squash, melons. Potatoes and onions I put in on Good Friday and they do well.

Yes what Sundance said is correct. I plant when the soil is around 55 degrees for plants like tomatoes. Onions and root veggies can be planted when soil is colder than 55

330, when it’s time for me to put corn seed in the ground soil temp is what I’m concerned about. That being said I spend a lot of time looking at forecast lows and highs in the coming weeks that effect the soil temp.

Frost in my garden is what I worry about. Soil temp I've never even thought of. As long as my plants don't freeze I'm fine. Different conditions every year and always more produce than we need as long as we plant after Decoration Day

I would just Google the soil temp needed for germination for all the different seeds and it can vary about 10-15 degrees from the mid forties to the upper 50s (soil temp). Best not to have seeds use up a lot of their energy in cold soil so they are weaker when emerging.

As to plants (transplants) Then air temp and the absence of cool nights say upper 30s etc. will be a good guide. In our area safe planting time for things like tomatoes etc. typically means it has been warm enough so that the soil temps are high enough as well. I plant 3 different sweet corn maturities, two of them in two different time frames. My longer day seeds I never even plant early as the genetics for longer day corn is a lot different then the early day varieties. I plant some later day as late as around the 4th of July or a tad later to have sweet corn in late september. When I plant 85 day corn in Mid May it is usually 6-10 days before it emerges depending upon temps. When I plant the same maturity on July 6th many times it is out in 5 days.
Sun flowers, peas, radishes, lettuce etc. will all germinate with soil temps in the mid 40s.

Soil temp. When it stays above 55 degrees for 3-4 days it’s time to get it in the ground.

tomatoes the chlorophyll A=B does not switch over with temps below 55f so the sugar is not made and the plants just sit there.
