Wife and I was picking morels yesterday in amongst a bunch of false hellebore and I told her, those are poisonous. She asked if the morels are safe then? I didn't have a clue. Figure they are, but ya never know. Anyone have an opinion? Also, we picked 3 morels that the flesh was thick. Like 2 to 3 times thicker than a normal morel. Anyone ever see any like that?

That stipe isn’t hollow, that’s not a Morchella. Young or not they’re hollow, to various degrees of gap in the stipe but it’s still going to be hollow. That in the photo isn’t hollow at the stipe

I looked at that mushroom again. the only place that is not hollow is the area where the cap attaches to the stem. The rest of the stem was hollow. I thought maybe it was the way I cut it, but that is not the case. The funny appearance in the texture is from being frozen and starting to thaw. It sure doesn't resemble any false morel that I have seen. Good thing I asked. I knew something was off as soon as I split them open.

Thank you Tatiana for that thorough explanation. I was going to comment but was hoping that you would instead.

Morels and gravy smothered on an elk steak for breakfast, plus eggs and hashbrowns. That was the first time I'd ever had morels and I still smack my lips at the memory.

We used to eat tons of morels and I absolutely love them. As I have gotten older I get sick for about 2 days after eating them. I sure do miss them.
I have nothing clever to put here.
