In Dec.2019,I found out my favorite musician Roger Mcguinn was going to perform in Hopkins,Mn.I told my daughter I would like to see Mcguinn perform once more ,before I died or he did.
I had taken my daughter to 3 of his concerts over the years, the first 33 years ago when she was 7.She ordered our tickets for the May 2020 event. Then covid became an issue and the concert was postponed twice.
Well last night the former Byrd,a few weeks shy of 80 performed---and what a show it was. I was afraid at his age his guitar skills and voice would have suffered dramatically'how wrong I was.
His electric 12 string Rickenbacker guitar was as amazing to hear as it was over 50 years ago and his guitar work has not diminished over time.It was a real joy to hear and see him again.
One change he has made in his shows is an intermission after about an hour, and the sold out crowd used that break to make a dash for the bathrooms. The lines for a pee break were so long, several people ran to near bye restaurants to use their facilities.
My daughter remarked that she hadn't seen so many old people in one place since she took my wife to Minneapolis when the covid shots were given out at the civic center there.LOL--she also remarked that I was one of those old people.(as if I didn't know)
The second half of the concert was as good as the first and after the encore, all of us old people headed home.
It was a great night to hear and see Roger Mcguinn,he gave us all more than our moneys worth.
Only difference this time,my daughter drove me to the concert.

Show started at 8:00,ended just after 10;00. Bet a lot of the fans missed their nap and are taking it now.
Their were a few young ones there-grandchildren of some fans. At 40 my child was one of the youngest there.
"ah but I was so much older then--I'm younger than that now"(My back Pages-1967) That was also the song Mcguinn opened the concert with.

Without me digging too deep, how did Graham Parsons figure in his career?

Coop, after roger and Chris Hillman fired David Crosby from The Byrds,Parsons was hired to play piano in the band. The piano playing part never really stuck, but Parsons love of country music greatly influenced Mcguinn and Hillman, resulting in the album--Sweetheart of The Rodeo--considered one of the first and most influential Country Rock albums
At this time they became the first rock act to play The Grand ole opry..
When The Byrds went to England to support the album--Parsons jumped ship and spend his time with kieth Richards of The Rolling Stones. So Parsons time as a Byrd was only a few months long.
Not long after Chris Hillman left The Byrds to form The Flying Burrito Brothers with Graham Parsons. After a couple albums,Hillman got tired of Parsons drug use and fired him from The Burritos. Parsons went solo and Died of a drug over dose at 27--another gifted musician dead from drugs.
As a side note Mcguinns-Mr.Spaceman-is considered by many to be the first country Rock hit song.It was also beamed up by nasa as a wakeup call for shuttle astronauts.

Roger was blessed with or worked very hard to become a very diversified muscian and has stalyed healthy for decades to be able to continue. I enjoy listening to his folk music renditions very much.

Not being able to carry a tune or play an instrument, people with talent have always intrigued me. When I see someone who has combined not only natural talent but also many countless hours to perfect playing the guitar I am always happy to watch and watch with my jaw dropped smooth open. Guys like him, Roy Clark, Jr. Brown, Jimmy Hendricks, Eric Clapton, etc. Usually their wrist gets tired before my eyes and ears.

I take in a lot of live music because I can and there are always a few pleasant surprises. Steve Wariners brother was one of them. You never hear his name mixed in with a list of the best guitar players of all time but if you get to see him live you will be super impressed.

I have seen Roger McGuinn solo a few times and he never disappoints. I saw the reunion tour for the 50th anniversary of the Sweetheart of the Rodeo album at the Austin City Limits facility in Austin, Texas. McGuinn and Hillman were backed up by Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives. It was a great show that included a mini-tribute to Tom Petty. McGuinn looked pretty healthy then but Hillman looked like his health was failing pretty badly. I would be surprised if he is still performing.

Cat,I was hoping that the Sweetheart of the rodeo tour would hit close to me,but it never did.
My wife, daughter and I met Chris hillman when he had the Desert Rose band.It was at the Minnesota state fair.He was signing autographs after the show,we went over to his table and I started to ask him if my wife could take his picture. But my wife jumped the gun and took a picture as i was asking him for his permission. He laughed and stood up and told us to come with him.
He took us around the building and told my wife to shoot away as he stood with me and my daughter for pictures. I was really impressed with his kindness.
Chris Hillman is still performing today.

Saw Roger or so years back in a very small setting in Pittsburgh.

Not sure ANYONE has ever brought as much out of a Rickenbacher 370 as him. An AMAZING talent !!!!

He has a summer home in Shell Wy. Great guitarist for sure and the Byrds "Sweet Heart of the Rodeo " one of the best albums ever.

Good to hear that Hillman is still performing. During the show in Austin they were saying on stage that he had just lost a house to a fire. That may have been the reason for his shakiness. As an aside, I saw McGuinn, Clark and Hillman as an opening act at Memorial Hall in KC. They absolutely tore it up. The crowd was so rowdy and kept yelling to "Bring back the Byrds!' that the headliner threatened to walk off the stage. As I recall the headliner was America. I think it was 1979.

During my lifetime some of the greatest music of all time has be written ,recorded and played by some truly great musicians. Some of those musicians are no longer in this world .However lucky for us some are still alive .And for a very few of them they are still as reverent as they where 20 or 30 years ago Bob Dylan and Neil Young are just two that come to mind . It is fair t say that both of them had some influence on Roger McGuinn's music and vice versa .Glad the concert lived up to your hopes
