Someone told me they use this for lawn and garden fertilizer.
Anybody ever use it for that?

Gypsum reduces the amount of salt and aluminum in soil and raises the calcium level. It only very slightly raises the PH.

Gypsum also supplies elemental sulfur as well as calcium. Like Keith says, it's the one way to raise calcium levels without changing pH. It also has value in loosening tight knit clay soils and creating more of the desirable crumb structure that plants need.

Benjamin Franklin was a big proponent of gypsum use.

Also helps break down hard clay soil.

But, will it make grass and gardens grow better?

Maybe, Is your Ph near neutral and do you need calcium?, is your ground heavy clay?, then maybe yes.

If your Ph is acid, then limestone will fit the bill..... So to answer your question,....it depends.... cool

On the types of clay that goes concrete hard in times of drought, yes. But as said it is dependent on whether it is needed on your soil type.

If your garden and lawn need what it has then yes, absolutely, but if it doesn’t then no, in fact it could hurt it. There’s no such thing as an additive that just flat helps gardens and lawns across the board. Get a soil analysis and add what it lacks. Your soil will need vastly different amendments than mine does, or even your neighbor on the next block over, and the amendments you need will vary greatly depending on what exactly you are trying to grow. The worst thing you can do for your garden is start throwing amendments in it Willy nilly without knowing what it already does or does not have in it

Gypsum is about 22% calcium and 17% sulfer. I buy it from a mine in FT. Dodge, Iowa. 25 ton loads are about 85 bucks a ton. I try to put on 200 to 500 lbs a year. You can buy it in a bag pelletized for about 300 ton.

Gypsum takes the place of lime. Serves the same purpose. Gypsum acts faster than lime. Disced discarded sheetrock in my garden year before last. First time I never had one tomato with blossom end rot.

I disagree with the above. The main purpose of lime is to adjust pH into a range that plant nutrients are more available for plants that do best in the 6-7.5 range. Gypsum will not raise an acidic soil's pH at all.

beaverpeeler, has it right gypsum has minimum effect of soil ph.

Where gypsum has an effect on Blossom End Rot is it's calcium content. BER is a due to a deficiency in calcium uptake, often seen in the first set of fruit in tomatoes and occasionally peppers. Most likely cause in most cases is fruit set before the roots are fully capable of uptake but if BER occurs on subsequent sets then it may be a soil deficiency.

It's the sulfur you need from the gypsum. It makes calcium uptake quicker and easier. Mike
