I got a deal on my visa card that is for 5% back on gas purchases. So a few minutes ago I bring it up to see exactly how much I owed. 5% means diddly if you carry a balance. There was a 41 dollar charge at a sears store in CA. So the first two calls to the bank I got Iranians or maybe Congolese, who knows, on the phone. I cant understand them and they cant understand me. The third call an American answers. I verify my gas purchases and he says they will remove the 41 dollars, cancel this card, and send me a new one. I guess they wanted to see if I would notice before making a big purchase?

So how did they get the number? How do I prevent it from happening again?

Always verify every purchase/charge on a statement. Small test fraud charges are a common method. If those go unnoticed, they hit woth bigger charges or maybe multiple charges and its game on for the thief.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

This has happened to me 3 times in the past 2 years. I had to cancel cards each time it happened. Now I don't hand the card to anyone to pay for my purchase. It's too easy for an employee to copy the number and the code on the back. Hopefully that will fix the problem for me.

It’s almost impossible to 100% guarantee your info can’t be stolen. With these new contactless chip cards there are devices out there that can steal your card info without you ever taking it out of your pocket. You can get an RFID blocking wallet and that helps but still isn’t a sure thing.

Yep , bob is right. i believe i my card info was stolen with this wireless method while i was in a store in pensacola. Had an older teen keep getting close to me for now reason, i thought it was odd at the time. Well by the time i drove an hour and half back home by card had been attempted to be used at several atms near that store right after we all left. It was denied and the bank fixed it but i think all you can do is get a bank that fixes this kind of stuff quick fast and in a hurry and try to check all your accounts once a day or so. Ive caught a bunch of stuff over the years. I also think the majority of the times i had info stolen, it was stolen from online stores that got hacked. i use USAA bank and i highly recommend it to anyone that is a vet that can qualify to use the bank.

This card is from Chase called Amazon Visa. I had it on file with Amazon. Made ordering easy. I think it was stolen off my computer or from Amazon since the charge was in CA. I think if it was hacked off my computer other cards will be also. So far nothing.

I've had it happen to me about three different times now. It's not that big of a deal on a credit card. You just deny the charges and get a new card. However, this is why you should never use a debit card like a credit card. If you have a debit card, only use it to withdraw cash, preferably at your own bank.

Be fun to shave all the thief's hair off. ALL of it everywhere and dump him/her out in a strange city about 3000 miles from home. Call the police in the town they are from and report an identity theft......

skimmer at a gas station pump or any place your card left your possession

we took a trip a few years ago , there were restaurants and one gas station my card left my possession they can even print a card if they have the info

my card was used 2 months later trying to buy Walmart gift cards my bank caught that I was not in WI then an hour later in GA and didn't let the transaction go through

with cell phone cameras you can take a picture of the card and have all the info you need in under a second to make purchases with it

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

You first card was probably skimmed at a gas station reader. Happened to me 10 years ago in NM. When I called the police, they even told me which pump it was on.

I have that card too. Thanks for the heads up, I'll keep an eye on it.
