Alright ole timers (and not ole timers too I reckon). I'm 35 year old new to trapping in okla. I chased unsuccessfully yotes and a big bobcat we have on camera and struck out. My 5 year old daughter set traps w me all year though so we had a great time and caught 1 coon and a skunk. Chased beavers too but construction close to town I think ran em out.

Anyways I'm building a lean to or shed for my first hopefully catches this year. My wife is pretty adamant my hobbies stay out in the pasture so building it off the barn. Any ideas on a setup? I skinned the coon off the pickup and effective is not a word we would use lol.

Pics greatly appreciated!!!!

Okie, good lighting, a heat source, and water, a freezer helps, maybe a refrigerator, coffee pot?

l would just keep it basic to start with. All you really need is a place to work out of the weather. Buy or make a skinning gambrel and hang it from a rafter to eliminate skinning on the tailgate. Good lighting is important. Inexpensive LED shop lights will fit the bill. A heat source is nice, but not really mandatory. As your skills and catches increase, you'll figure out what you need and what works for you, Good luck and have fun!

Lighting and heat are where I started. A electric winch is in the top 5 for me. Remember Rome wasn’t built in a day!

Pawnee is spot on, you start out and continually add things over the years till you have a shop like you want. First off good lighting can be had with LED's and they aren't expensive. next would be a barrel stove, a kit is cheap, they throw out quite a bit of heat and really drop the humidity down for drying. Gambrel hung for above with the idea of getting a skinning machine with electric wench in the future. A table with a pair of vice grips mounted towards one end to hold the animal making the opening cuts and use table when boarding. A fleshing beam would about round out a good starting fur shop and all of this you can make other than the lighting.
Good luck.

Why wait or do it gradually?
That is a dangerous habit.
It is too easy to run out of time or opportunities.
Build it much larger than you may ever need.
Building size is like horsepower. Have you ever heard of a guy complaining of too much?

If I ever set up a new shop and fur shed room I want to put in one of those big one piece double sink with pan shaped counter tops on either side and a high pressure water hose suspended from above. It would make cleaning a muddy coon or even a mess of fish a snap.

Build your wife a storage shed first or your fur shed will end up as one.

Every shop or barn I have ever built was quickly too small. Go multi purpose and big.

Welcome. We need more Okies on here.

I will 2nd make it tall enough. Think 14' + you will want the head room for your future skinning machine.

I rebuilt an old corn crib into a fur shed and designed it around the placement of a skinning machine to use the maximum height at the peak of the roof. I am very happy every time I hit the button on the electric hoist to pull a coyote or coon. You need 10 1/2 to 11 feet for it to work right. Money well spent.

Find a barn type garden shed to start with then go from there, run power toss in a heater and your good to go!

The reason for the approach I gave is money, not everyone one has a unlimited expense account for a new fur shed. Sounds like he is just starting out, this is the approach I had to take and it worked well for me.

I built a horizontal skinning machine. I've skinned in trailers, multiple sheds, garage and outside. Any where I can stand I can skin. Plus you make a ceiling 12 to 14 foot high it takes a lot more to heat it. Just food for thought to maximize space.

I need to go with a horizontal machine. My ceiling is just a tad too low.

Definitely make the ceiling TALL. A big male coyote skinning with a hoist set up and you will realize quickly how nice it is to stand tall and not crouch down so often when you are working the last steps of peeling. Long coyote plus long pelt hanging but not quite done off the head area yet...you get the picture.
I bought an inexpensive hoist from harbor freight and have this bolted to ceiling on the ceiling joist. Simple buttons remote up and down switch on chord. Works really slick.
I also picked up a couple magnate tool holder straps and attached thos with arms reach of the skinning area. Easy to slap a knife blade, steel sharpening rod, tail zipper, etc. onto the magnate strip, easy place to keep everything handy, safe, and reachable.
I also recycled a few of those big, rope handled party drink tubs and I use those for scraps and bodies. About as much weight as I can handle when full, slide into back of my truck easily when time to run to dump site, etc.
Lots of rubber gloves ready in the shed is good too.
Good lighting.
Some music.
Heat.
Make it a place to get some work done late at night by yourself but comfy enough so you don't rush and mess up the fur or your fingers.
Have fun!

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Everything above . Plus make it twice as big as you think you'll need . There's never enough room

For me as a old timer a must is good lights, consistent heat source. Keep your work areas like beam up high enough so you are not bending to far over all the time. Good storage for stretchers, knives ect. Good flat surface counter also. Don't forget good tunes and a freezer.

You might need to skin a deer some cold night.
