Anyone ever pattern birdshot out of a rifled slug barrel? I,m hunting with a buddy for coyote & it's the only shotgun i have. Will the pattern stay tight or be all over the place?

Spinning a solid projectile stabilizes it. Spinning a wad cup full of shot? Your going to have to buy a barrel. I have an extra Mossberg 500 12 gauge barrel. No chokes though. It takes the screw in type.

In the Mossberg I put a rifled barrel on, it spreads the pattern more, with inconsistent coverage. Shoots sabot slugs great, Foster type rifled slugs are not for a rifled barrel either, best in a smooth bore.

Your going to get a donut shaped pattern with a growing hole in the center the further away you are

Think cylinder bore donut, IE wide with a hole in it he middle

like they said , it spins the pattern open and fast it would work at across the bedroom distances but even 10 yards it is going to be getting really big with a whole

you can coyote hunt with it still just run it as a rifle with the same slug you use on deer unless that is illegal there , can you rifle for coyote ? maybe use that if not

then see if you can borrow a shotgun till you can buy one, they have to be about the easiest gun to borrow

You can use any single projectile that is designed to expand and buckshot no larger than #4. There are some other rules during big game seasons.

As other have said a fully rifled barrel will open patterns considerably due to spinning. However Col Fosberry delved into the issue over a century ago and the paradox buck and ball gun was the result.
