I'm pretty sure that my knee issues are directly related to all the time I spent on them while riding Elans! With the insulation on my insulated overalls "crushed," the ol' knees got pretty cold. Over and over. pb

Happy Hunting Season Trappers. Sorry I haven't checked in in a while. Been a busy summer. Spent a bit of time out at the trapline cabin this spring and fall. Did lots of videos but haven't shared them yet. Found a few antlers this spring and 2 dead wolves on the line. One was right on the trail and looked to be a 2 year old killed by the pack. [Linked Image]
The other one is a yearling I found on an old trail 1/2 mile from the first. Judging from the hide quality, I'm guessing it was shortly after i'd left last spring. [Linked Image]
Found a couple nice moose sheds and lots of caribou antlers [Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
Game cams produced lots of bear pics this year. Definitely more bears this year than any other year since I'd been going to here. Very few caribou pics compared to what I was seeing out there last winter. [Linked Image]
Spent a lot of time working on my buddies cabin and we got a lot done including some good fishing. [Linked Image]

[Linked Image]
I howled with the wolves pretty much every day out there and ended up calling this one right to the cabin [Linked Image]
Spent 4 weeks running the Mothership carrying wild land firefighters on the Minto Lakes fire this summer. Great time running the boat and protecting our own lands. Met a lot of great guys and gals mostly from out of state. [Linked Image]

Still waiting to get paid from ol Uncle Sam for that mission.
Just returned from the trapline guiding a caribou hunter from North Carolina. Great guy but hunted hard for one adult bull. Tough hunting due to lack of bou. Lots of griz for sure. [Linked Image]

Here's a couple pics of a young marten from our fire camp. Just plain hungry. [Linked Image]

Off after moose tomorrow. Good luck and be safe out there.

The amount of bears will effect the amount of calf, both caribou and moose survival. The dead young wolves is an indication that the pack needs thinning in my opinion. I’ll bet you can’t wait to get after it again!

Thanks guys. Made it back from my moose guiding adventure. No much to report. Spent 17 days in some new country void of moose. Lots of bears both black and griz, a few caribou but didn't see a single sign of a moose. It was some beautiful country for glassing and hiking when the weather permitted. [Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
Found an old guide cabin that the bears didn't hesitate to walk through two walls and evict a lot of the contents. [Linked Image]

They definitely need to be thinned down in that country and may make that a mission myself. The cabin was very salvageable in Alaskan's eyes. Good roof Good cabin..
My hunter was a heck of a guy with a great attitude even without seeing a moose. That poor guy was stuck 10 of his 12 days in an 8'x8' tent with me due to weather. I don't even like being stuck with me for that long.. I have have two strict rules in my camps. No talking about Politics or Religion and we'll get along fine. You know how it gets when you are stuck in camp, solving all the world's problems.. Our saving grace was that I brought "Alaska's Wolfman" by Jim Rearden out and read it to him twice. Reading that book really make me realize how weak and lazy we are today compared to Frank back in those days.. Reading that book to hunters has been a thing that I have been doing for years. Anyway, my hunter was the kind of client that you really want to get a trophy for and it just didn't work out for us. That is why we call it hunting and not killing. I glassed through the scope and bins more on that hunt than any sheep hunt I've ever been on. [Linked Image]
Spent the day with my hunter in Los Anchorage waiting for his out going flight since we were a couple days late getting out o f the field due to weather. Swung into the park on the drive home to test my failed moose calling ability and weather shut that down too. Decided to try to catch the last couple days of moose season down in Minto Flats. Didn't sound like many people did well but had to give it a go. I called a friend of mine to see if I could take his boys with me calling moose. He said yes but they wouldn't be down till late Saturday evening. I canoed across the river on Saturday morning and walked back to my spot and started calling. This is on the edge of where the fire was this summer so I wasn't all that excited but had to try. Within two hours, I had a response and boy howdy was that exciting. I can call.... I messed up though and was a little too aggressive and ran him off. It is a antler restricted area so Spike-Fork, 50" or 3 brownies on one side and I am close to the border of the GM Unit also. I didn't get to see this guy but figured I give him a chance to calm down and return later. I did see a little sign along the slough and the trail so was pretty stoked now. I paddled back across the river and loaded a load of firewood and had lunch. At 5pm I paddled back across and tried it again. This time I used my best horny cow impersonation along with some light tending grunts. Here he comes again lighty grunting and starting to circle downwind. I had to move fast to stay downwind of him. I really don't want to shot a moose in the evening. I personally like to shoot my moose in the morning and take my time processing it. Anyway, I quietly ran down the trail trying to stay ahead of the grunting bull stopping along the way to get a locate. The good thing is we are going closer to the canoe and river. The last time I stopped, he went quiet so I let out a soft cow call. That was a mistake as now he locked in on me and came grunting loudly. I am standing on the GMU (Game Management Unit) boundary and he is closing fast from the open unit. The unit behind me is closed. As he was coming through the rose hips and high bush cranberry bushes, I got a good look at his brow tines as he was not close to the 50" limit. He had 3 brows on each antler. Legal... 7:30 pm at 30 yards from me he stopped and decided that I was one ugly cow and maybe we should fight instead. At 51 years old, I am not much of a fighter but instead raised the .375 H&H and sent a 300 grain A-Frame through his skull. That took the fight right out of him. And now the work began. 1/2 mile from the river with 1 hour of daylight left I put the knives to work.

The boys made it down and even heard the shot so they were excited. The next morning, I canoed them across the river with packs, knives, game bags and a saw. Bruce and Justn weren't far behind in the boat. It was nice to see the enthusiasm in these two young boys walking up the trail. These two packed out the entire moose on their backs with smiles on their faces. Oh to be young again. They didn't get a moose this fall so we shared the young bull and should put both households in meat all winter. [Linked Image]

These boys are 12 and 13 and made me feel like there is a little hope left in our younger generation and were a pleasure to work with for sure.

Got some meat to cut up now and back to working iron. Trapping season is coming fast so hope you are all prepared.

Good hunt and help. Always have liked gear, how it is used and maintained. Back packing is a specialty in itself. So good the boys want to learn things young.

Thanks for the share, JR.

Nice. Those young men aren’t born knowing how to work through a moose. They have an idea how to now.

Awesome! Glad to see kids working hard instead of hardly working.

Good idea to "call in the kids...!"

A couple weeks ago I was hunting with Kid #2. He shot a moose with his bow at about 8:45pm one evening. First thing I did was call Kid #1 (6' 5", 330 lbs) to come help! Then we got out the headlamps.

I HATE cutting up moose after dark, but we were done by 11:30pm. More to the point, no one got a knife cut, either on themselves or the other two guys!

Pete
