This is a soul-searching topic and I agree with both sides. I own a 742 and a 10-22, not what I consider assault weapons by any stretch but some politicians might disagree. My 742 hasn't been used in 30 years because my hunting style is different now. All my deer hunting is with bolt action rifles. I have two 1100 shotguns (one for waterfowl and one for skeet and clays), and two Model 12 pump guns that I have never fired. All are stock configurations in original wooden stocks. I have never wanted a combat or tactical weapon other than some pistols I have.
I was a military Reservist for 27 years and really enjoyed days at the range. I qualified expert with pistol and rifle. We also shot combat courses with 870s using 9 pellet 12 gauge buckshot. The pistol and shotgun courses were fun and designed to prepare me to kill if necessary. I never felt the need for an AR, and don't even enjoy range time when they show up there. On my last visit to a public wildlife range, a "long-haired hippie freak" to my left was blasting away with an AK he had just acquired. To hear him, you would have thought he was a combat vet and firearm historian, which he clearly wasn't. He couldn't hit a garbage can at 50 yards. I guess he enjoyed the image he made for himself. His brass often hit me at the next bench. I packed my gear and left. A private club I belong to doesn't allow assault weapons. They don't even allow human or animal-shaped targets. They do everything possible to maintain their relationship with a spreading community that has surrounded their once-remote property.
Times are changing. I'm not judging anyone, but during the ammo shortage, the factories catered to the AR owners at the expense of hunters, and that has sort of turned me off.
Just blowing steam here. There's no such thing as an assault rifle. Assault is just a verb that can be put in front of any object.

I was friends with a Vietnam vet who had ,shall we say, major issues. He moved up to the U.P. and immediately started negatively commenting on the traditions up here, like church, deer hunting, trapping, etc. He insisted nobody but vets should own a firearm. One day I went to his place and he was shooting his AR15 off his front deck, across the waters of Lake Michigan. He told me he likes to skip slugs across the water like rocks. What do you say to his logic?I didn't say anything.

An assault weapon used in a non-military application such as hog hunting or target shooting does not remove it from its primary design and definition as an assault weapon. There are many classic military rifles that do not meet my definition of an assault weapon (Mauser 98s come to mind, even the Gaarand), but I am hard-pressed to see that AR and AK knock offs are far removed from their original purpose, which is to efficiently and quickly kill as many people as possible.
I'm assuming you've got no problem with ownership of these guns.

What's an assault weapon? If someone hits you on the head with a phone book, is that an assault phone book?

The guy probably needs your friendship and support, but that doesn't mean you have to let him get away with statements like that. You can explain where he is wrong, or where you disagree, without being overly forceful about it. Let him “get away” ? What exactly did he do that broke a law ? See here’s some of your guys problems no one on here making those statements has or is trying to “take “ your guns ITS JUST AN OPINION!! Read my sentence again. I'm suggesting they have a conversation. That's all.

The design is to put as many bullets downrange in a short amount of time. There's much more efficient ways to kill a lot of people for a heckuva a lot less cost than any gun,

That 10-22 is sure an assault weapon then. 110 rounds as fast as you can pull the trigger if you buy a drum magazine for it.

I see the term assault weapon thrown around in this thread a great deal...We are really talking about "Assault Style Weapons"
The assault style weapons are no more deadly than a semi-auto deer rifle...In fact less deadly...And don't say I can't reload fast enough to be as effective, or get ready to lose a bunch of money on that bet.
You need the selector "fun" switch with its semi, burst and full auto modes to be a true so called assault weapon...Just more word play the media uses to dupe people.
"Gun Violence" is the worst one, you never hear of baseball bat violence, knife violence, or bomb violence.

I agree with others- he can think or say anything he wants. In fact, I'd give him more leaway than I would most ppl because he did serve during a war and because he has the self awareness to know he is not as stable as he wishes he was and takes responsibility to make sure that his problems dont endanger other people

When you have a RIGHT you don’t have to justify it with a need.
