If you’ve never had a scope and don’t want to spend an arm and a leg, go to a sporting goods store and spend some time with the crusty old guy behind the counter. Pick his brain good. Ask what he would use to get a feel for what’s out there that would meet your needs.
Never too old to learn

I just bought a Athlon like your wanting. For the $ I'd buy another. It is my second Athlon scope. I like both of them so far

Vortex would be my recommendation. GCP posted a link above to the crossfire. If you are going to be shooting past 200 yards I would spend an extra C-note and get the 1x6 strike eagle. The holdover hashes in the reticle are fairly close for most 55-62 grain loads. I can hit 4 mil targets out to 600 yards with mine. At 500 and 600 I do have to aim at heads to make good center mass hits, but I'm running a 16in barrel. Yeah, I got a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24, illuminated, with the AR-BDC.

the hash marks in the scopes are a set number of MOA at full magnification they happen to fall at some nodes in common ballistic arcs every round , height over bore and zero distance is a little different it is just a way to measure , you really should find your own numbers there are mang very good tools this image is from Strelock pro a phone app ballistic calculator this happens to be one of my 223 loads the rifle is sighted in for 218 yards aka 200 meters , it is the farthest distance my regular range has the target is a 22"wide by 24" tall piece of steel I had hanging out at the farm, when the cows aren't on that pasture I can shoot it to 420 yards where it hangs they don't line up 100, 200 , 300 , 400 but when you know what they are you can get first round hits on steel very often. on game I wouldn't likely go much past 250 but it all depends on your ability to know the range

the sub tensions in the scope in the picture above are 2moa hash on the horizontal axis and 1.5 , 4.5 , 7.5 and 11 moa on the vertical axis
if you can see the dust rise up from a miss , you can take a very quick mental snap shot of where that was and almost before not hear the report back adjust the spot where the dust rose in the optic to the center of the target and send another , and make the hit harder to do that when you ave no reference in the scope
anything under 600 dollars is going to be second focal plane and second focal plane is fairly easy to use
MOA Minute of angle there are 60 minutes time in an hour there are 60 minutes of angle in a degree and 360 degrees in a circle or 21600 minutes in a circle
the strike eagle is a 1/2 MOA adjustment so if you are shooting 6 minutes right at 100 yards you would move the turret 12 clicks left

yup I had one with a battery compartment issue the sent me a new one in about a week.just print off
I have shot with several Vortex employees at matches, they really will fix or replace almost anything until it is just completely ridiculous.
