Forty years ago this summer I signed up to be a lifetime member of the PTA .If you join the PTA you received a subscription to the Trapper and Predator Caller . I have been trying to better organize my inventory of trapping and trapping related stuff .I located my copies of the Trapper magazine and glanced through a few of them In the Feb 1982 issue Jim Helfrich wrote and article called Circle shy and Charlie Dobbins wrote Animal Behavior for the same issue [Linked Image]

.On the cover of the August 1983 issue was a picture of Kermit Stearns with the caption Kermit Stearns Hall of Fame recipient . Kermit Stearns was a well known trapper here in PA and at the time handled the Question and Answer box for the Trapper publication . The price of fur was enjoying a growth spurt at the time and trapping was a way to actually make some good money The Trapper publication reflected that It was like a newspaper in size The pages where about 10 x 14 and there where from 80 to 135 pages per issue And ad I found in the May 1988 issue is a familial name still today Bob Jameson I have attached a few pictures to show some of how the publication was like in the 1980s

Jerry loves those old trapping publications. He had a ton of em.

He says good solid nfo without a that pink trap crap.

He doesn't go for that stuff much..

He's pretty much no nonsense and wants to learn all th useful info he can from a solid publication..

He said the publications have sure changed over the years.

It's amazing how much things fluctuate with the market

That's some classic trapping stuff you got there.

I don't care how nice the hand soap smells, you should never walk out of the restroom sniffing your fingers.

I think I have nearly every copy of The Trapper and Predator Caller from 1982 until present . And I have nearly every copy of Fur Fish Game from about 1967 Plus every copy with the possible exceptions of a very few of the PA Game News from about 1967 through 2021 Before I join the PTA and started receiving the TRAPPER magazine I did not know about so much info /trapping supplies etc. I am sure I have got my moneys worth out of joining the PTA as a lifetime member 40 years ago Thanks for looking!

The early days of "The Trapper" and "The Trapper & Predator Caller" magazines had some awesome issues. They were the good ole days.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

Until that time trapping had always been a tightlipped almost like a secret society .But the 1980's had so many great trappers .And many of them where great writers also Carroll Black' Bud Boda, ,Jim Helfrich ',Charlie Dobbins (my favorite) ,Tom Miranda Tom Knause , Jeff Coon Ricther Gerry Blair .to name a few .It was a great time to be a young trapper And the original Trapper and Predator Caller brought them al together as a group . And that group taught many of the trappers that are still at it today

I also liked the other departments,Wiley Carroll s writing took some getting used to,but once you got on to it it was interesting as all get out.George Wacha's Putting by and making do was interesting too, maybe some trapping, maybe some wine making, maybe gardening, maybe bee keeping, you never knew from month to month but if you were into self sufficiency you looked forward to his column. It was a different time, that's for sure

I wanted the lifetime from the beginning but could not. Later in life I won a rifle at state banquet and had option to take lifer instead. I did not hesitate to take the membership. No great benefit or bragging rights, just knowing I got what I wanted. I still pay someones annual every year.
There is poly ticks in everything. I learned to let it roll off as it continues whether I am there or not.
I learned a LOT from some those elders, not just trapping.

Oh and I read every word in the old rags. That is way cool you still have all yours.

I remember the Dallas saga, but not who wrote it. Those might have value now or later.

Great topic 151.

I remember that issue. Was it Major Bodiker that did the Claude Dallas article? 1980 ? It has been awhile but I remember reading it.

Seems the Clinton's have been Teflon a LONG time...

Some other notable trappers/writers that got their start during the 1980s are Bob Noonan Don Shumacher, Jim Spencer Hal Sullivan Ron and Pete Leggett Major Boddicker. are a few that come to mind .I am certain I do not remember all of them right now .And there where as many other great trappers that just kept to them selves and never really put their names out for the public to see. The cost of the publication in 1982 was .99. A couple of $70 dollar fox and several $40.00 raccoons got those that worked hard a nice pay out .As I remember gas was about .55 to .65 cents per gallon. Those old Predator Caller magazines are like a history book with all the articles and the advertisements where a wealth of information allso
