I have a couple dozen very strong #4 jumps. Are they improved any by cutting down the pan edge so it will fall further down. They don’t have factory pans. The PIT pans come in contact with top of spring making the space between pan and jaws smaller. I’ve seen old beaver traps with very small pans and wondered if this might be their thinking.

Many years back I would cut down the pans all of my number 14 jump traps. I only have a few left and don't use them much anymore

No.I've never had the problems others have claimed to have using jumps using stock pans either..Those PIT PANS are a big improvement tho over the stock pans. When I first started out I used No.4 Victor longsprings and lost more beaver than I held, primarily hind foot catches.Other guys love them, but that was my experience with them. Many guys cuss the jumps out,and if you compare them to the modern coil springs they are archaic, you can't replace the springs, and the pans are sloppy. But thru the years I caught a impressive amount of beaver in them.

The therory behind smaller pans versus larger pans on beaver traps Is you get less toe catches with the smaller pans. You may also get more misses with small pans but In therory you get less sprung traps along with those misses.. But with the use of the larger jaw spreads on some beaver traps the small pan idea Is a mote point. But when working with the smaller jaw spreads the smaller pan Is something to take Into consideration.

Back in the 80s I bought a dozen 4 jumps. I was so unimpressed with them I threw the entire dozen into the Yakima rivet and stuck with my long springs.

I had the same type experience with them trying to catch beavers. I told dad about it, and his response was enough of them would make a good boat anchor.

Not the best beaver foothold for sure, but if you choose the right placement they work. Back in the day I used them in certain spots when I was running out of #4dls.

Yup, I used to use them in any place where I was worried about someone stealing my traps. Caught quite a few beaver in them, but far preferred dbls. They are a directional trap, and don't work well where the beaver may be coming from either direction. On something like a castor mound set where the beaver should be coming a certian direction they worked fine. Oh and they are a lot more of a pain to set when standing in knee deep water and mud than most other traps.

Ditto! Sprung traps with nothing in them was my most usual experience.

I wish we could still use the 14's here.Great trap.I knew a guy that had 150 of them when the DNR outlawed them.Needless to say he wasn't very happy.
