After four days of trying to contact the MN DNR, I finally was able to talk to a human being.

It turns out:
  • It's my fault for not having an electric fence around the bee hives
  • Climate change is the next thing to blame
  • We'd be in better shape to try to help if we could just get rid of this epidemic and open our offices.
  • Here is another dead end phone number you can try
I guess the next thing to try is have these marauders tracked down and prosecuted for not wearing masks.

Tonight they were back, and destroyed another hive. i called left another message for the DNR

It was 7:00 PM and still light enough to collect a bit more maple sap. As i grabbed the last bucket I looked up into the eyes of a black bear. Well, OK, 50 feet away. I stood straight up, waved my arms and yelled at him. He just thought i was nuts, and after about a minute turned and wandered off.

I called the DNR again, and actually got to talk to a warden. They will be here tomorrow morning. I'll keep you posted.

A bear to protect myself or other. Not a sow and cub to protect personal property.

I don't know, yet where the DNR stands on this. They must think I'm Joe Biden, and won't return my calls.

I am like some others wondering if you put up a good set of hot wires and keep the ground wet the problem might export itself. Maybe over to a bunny huggers garden spot! grin

At 20 yards a load of 00 buck shot in a full choked 12 gauge will make a bear say oof and collapse. One shot and anybody who hears it will just look at each other and say: "was that a gunshot?"

The tone of our conversation has changed a bit after the face to face.

Ranger Smith says Minnesota Statutes allow me to kill to protect my property. He needs to be notified within 48 hours, and I cannot keep the animal.

City ordinance does not allow discharge of firearms. Too bad. Last night, my .45 ACP was nearly in my hand with a shot selection of body or head.

He is planning on spending a little time out here this morning. He says he may have some portable electric fencing; and asked if my area was rural enough for him to shoot.

My shot opportunity last night, could have been anything from the center image to most or the upper two quandrants. I wished I seen this chart earlier, and knew of my right to protect my property.

I'll be carrying 00 buck collecting sap, today.

Danged bears are relentless.

The wife saw one out the window tearing through the garbage. She was on a second-floor deck and the bear on the driveway, about 60 feet away. She waived her arms and screamed at it until her vocal chords gave out. Finally, the bear finally decided she was a noisy neighbor, and meandered off.

I was still working, and she called me with whatever voice she had left. Claimed she was going to do a Joe Biden when it came back, and scare it off with her shotgun. So, I get to thinking:

That (those) bears get attracted back with a nose that is hundreds of times more sensitive than ours. I figure if he get's smacked in the face with a pepperball at 250fps out of her Byrna® launcher he ain't never coming back. It just might solve my bear problems without having to deal with the DNR, and/or city. That would definitely be an issue If I need to shoot it with a firearm.

Any thoughts?

If you're going to go with an electric fence... Be serious about it.

Just don't forget to turn it off before you touch it.

No electric fence!

There ain't no more small area for bees or quail to protect. It ain't kid or visitor friendly, and way too expensive.

I’d just kill it if it were a problem. Here you are allowed to do that though.

I had one in my yard last night too. I just ran it off as I blame all of the dead beavers in a shed and grease jugs sitting around because my kid is busy baiting bears elsewhere. Lol

Yup!

Very true, and my very first thought.
  • My first several encounters were with a sow and cub/yearling. No one shot solution to that.
  • Unfortunately:I have had multiple conversations with the DNR and Park Reserve...They know I will shoot it on sight. My own fault.
  • They, especially the Park Reserve are watching their revered bear
  • Although legally justified to shoot a bear to protect my property...a legal battle will surely follow
  • It is only a city ordinance, but I am not allowed to discharge a firearm within the city limits
  • If I don't report shooting it within 48 hours I am violating the law.

The DNR refuses to make it go away. I just might be able to with the right projectiles.
