Anywhere that has or has had hog farms have the potential for wild hogs. In Ohio, we've had em upto Cleveland. Some of em are intentionally released for hunting. There was a case here where a guy released some hogs near crop farms then wait for damage from them to show up then offer the effected farmers to take care of the hogs for a fee.

Some of the genetic lines in the hogs here had russian hog genetics

any where an in-tack male and female get out of their pens and go feral and breed and you have a population.

it is all about how fast you can get them under control

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Their wild ancestors range well up into the northern latitudes of eurasia.

Doesn't seem like they would be hard to control anywhere you could use snowmobiles.

The Canadian Government had a program where they set farmers and ranchers up with wild boar to sell hog hunts. I know it is hard to believe, but they seem to get out of the high fence at times. ND figures some of it's wild hogs come out of Canada at times.

When I guided for bear and moose hunts in Quebec , late 80's early 90's, met a farmer that was raising them .
The little ones had those spots that were a give away .
I don't know much else about them , they were in a barn and in seperate pens .

We have met the enemy and the enemy is us!

Hogs are the fastest critters to go back to being feral

When I was a kid the only "wild" hogs I remember were in the woods around our weekend place in Oklahoma. But they were not wild like ferals, just turned loose to foarage and rounded up in the fall

I killed 47 just off of my place in 2020 (decided to keep count that year) and could not tell a difference other than short term (2 weeks or so). Put pressure on them and they move out, but soon return with reinforcements

I believe that they can be eradicated if we wanted.
Trouble is there are some self centered it's all about me types that want to hunt hogs and profit off them.
Nobody in their right mind would want them around.

I'm all for the state making releasing, raising or keeping wild hogs illegal. Keeping defined as having wild hogs in a fenced area whether 100sq ft or 1000 acres or more.

We’ve actually had a similar experience here in eastern NC.

A careless hog farmer let some hogs get away from him upstream from Harlan County Reservoir in Nebraska and they turned into a problem. The state would kill a pickup load a year. Don't know if they're still there or not.
Elk are a problem in Nebraska too. Federal turned them loose on Federal land and they quickly moved to private and started eating corn and soybean fields. Feds said too bad you can't bother them. They are protected.

we have a growing problem in Manitoba.
They are bloodlines from Eurasia...these are not escaped tamworth or berkshire pigs running around.
Manitoba shut down farming/owning wild boars close to 20 years ago...but escaped population just keeps growing.
they have established themselves in spruce woods provincial park north of cypress river that is surrounded by irrigated farm fields that is 30 miles from my place.
They are spreading up the river valleys and we have had them on our place already.
problem is they inhabit some really rough terrain and they are not stupid.
also some land owners don't want people on there land to hunt or trap them.
here is a map of travel route of 1 radio collared boar.
they cover some ground! he was within 2 miles of my farm. [Linked Image]

What ever became of that? Do you have any information that would let me read more about this case?

Releasing hogs is a terrible idea, yet many people see no harm in it. Should be one of the most serious penalties of all

In our state, you can hunt them on private and a fair bit of public year. The USDA employees hog trappers who do nothing but trap hogs - year round. The phone triggered traps. They seem to maybe be reducing the population in some areas. Those guys will trap nearly 1000 a year - apiece. I killed 153 off my 350 acres in six months a few years ago. I cant beat them, so I embraced them. I have a thermal equipped rifle and spend far more time hunting them than anything else. Four corn feeders with texting cameras.

WhiteCliffs......what part of Ark are you in? I'll be living east of Fayetteville in a couple months.
State of Ark says you have to eliminate 66% of a herd every year just to keep them from expanding.

I never heard or saw them when I was up in Kansas and I assumed they didn't like the winters. Now that I have been around them a lot down here I think it was the open country that limits their expansion. In open country they are so easy to hunt you could potentially eradicate them. Down here in the brush they tear stuff up and drop huge litters on the ground with very little to worry about.

We need more Airport Trappers and Boy Named Sue's because these things are everywhere

USDA chopper killed 40+ on the Cimarron River south and east of Liberal 6-7 years ago. The Russian Olive is so thick you have to crawl through it. Once they get in it dogs are they only choice.
