I'm still (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) off about paying off my wife's student loans. I didn't go to college and own my own business. My wife is a school teacher and had 55 thousand dollars in student loans. She made the minimum payment to Sallie Mae and freddie mac, and still owed the original loan amount.
Obviously college didn't teach economics 101. You don't go to Harvard to work at Hardee's.
I paid for a college education but unfortunately didn't get to go to the college party's.

Well look at the bright side. You have been getting to enjoy everything she learned in school.

Its an investment to a career path you desire. And if you have yo take out a loan to do, you have to understand the obligations. Some other entity you borrowed from fronted you the money to do this. They are are the business to earn on their loaned dollars. Like a mortgage...you get a house but you owe the note.
Pay it off...two sides to every contract.

Dr. Alfred Adler's psychology theory was that people's situational circumstance and their behavior in those circumstances was a product of the choices people make.
I'm Adlerian in my philosophy.

So if you go to college and college is pay to play....
well then pay it.
Or don't go.

It's called being responsible.

Student loans should never be forgiven.

The government should have nothing to do with student loans. This is something the private sector can and should manage. If it was entirely private, loans would only go to students enrolled in curriculums that would lead to a job with a pay scale that supports repayment in a reasonable time frame. The loaning institutions might also require grades be maintained.

1) the Gov't should not be in the business of giving student loans, leave that to private institutions. I can just imagine trying to get a loan for a degree in gender studies.

2) the amount of money that colleges have in endowments is over $690,000,000,000. That would pay for a little over 1/2 of whats owed. The colleges pushed people out the door that can't use their degree to pay for the cost of it then let the colleges pay for the useless degree and they can forgive the rest. Doing this will force colleges to reevaluate what they do and thin the staff. Maybe they will get wise and fire all the professors who teach useless subjects. Subjects like gender studies for one.

Student loan program is just more government meddling. Free market will take care of the ridiculously high cost of college.

But you come on here asking if we should limit loan forgiveness? Let them pay for their own collage. It is part of being an adult, paying your own way.

Go in the military, serve your country, then go to college. When I first got out of HS I had no idea what I wanted to do. After getting out of the military I had matured enough to seek a job path. Then I went to college on the GI bill. Your country doesn't owe you a college education if you are not willing to serve your country first. Or, pay for it on your own dime.

No different than the Government telling landlords they cant evict their rentors for not paying rent during the Covid,,yet the landlords were still expected to pay property taxes,,with no rental revenue coming in.

There's no such thing as student loan forgiveness. It's just forcing people who didn't sign onto the loan to pay for it.

Government funds a lot of college research in major institutions, but other than the military academies and merchant marine academy, are there any federally run colleges.

I agree that getting the government out of the loan guarantee business might provide better controls and loan underwriting. Then again, banking loans come from money loaned to the banks by the Federal Reserve.

We have a broken system of student loans. Surely private control is needed.

I am absolutely livid about this student loan forgiveness. Sends a horrible message about not holding people responsible for their actions. Plus its demeaning to the folks getting the bailout, it tells them that they aren't smart enough to figure out a way to take care of an agreement that they freely entered into.

Like lots here, I grew up without much but worked my way through college and paid back the student loans I took out. I had a job at the college I attended and went home every weekend to work on a turkey farm picking eggs. And fur trapped every fall. At the time, it would sometimes feel overwhelming trying to keep everything together with working and classes. But after graduating, there is a sense of pride and accomplishment of doing something through grit and hard work.

My older daughter, Leah just graduated this spring from South Dakota State University in Brookings. She has an RN degree, has a full time job lined up in Sioux Falls at Sanford Health. We started saving money for her for college when she was born, plus she worked through out high school and college. She got some honors scholarships and between that, work and the 529 we set up we were able to pay her way through. She has a strong work ethic which will take her far in this world.

At this point in my life and for some time, I am glad that I didn't have rich parents. When you are able to buy things that you worked hard for, makes you appreciate them much more, than having them handed to you. Since I was 16 years old I've borrowed money in my life for vehicles, school, for business and for building a house. Every time I've borrowed money, I figure the person lending it to me is taking a chance on me, so I'm going to shake their hand and do my best to honor the agreement I made. And that's the way business is done in the the rural part of Minnesota that I live in, and I'm sure it is the same in much of rural America. A handshake and a person's reputation means something and it should. And it means more than the piece of paper you sign at the bank.

One of the best things my dad ever did was tell me......."Son, I can never help with your college expenses".

Went to school full time and worked a full time job. I did take one loan for $7500 but paid it off before graduating. I have no doubt that I appreciated everything more, and worked harder than if someone else was paying the freight

While we are at it, I want reparations from the idiots that voted Sniffy into office.

They can pay off my mortgage for a start.

That is the same thing I told my two kids. You want to go to collage, you pay for it. Part of the reason I didn't go, was I didn't have money to pay for it. My one son in law paid his way through pharmacist school. He worked full time when going to school and still graduated number eight in the US. It's not like it can't be done.

If you want an education bad enough, you will find a way to get one. My mom raised 6 children, could not afford college. One brother stayed on the farm and 5 siblings got BS degrees and 3 masters. We all worked our tails off during the week, weekends, college breaks and summers.

The whole college system is as bass-ackwards as it comes

I've been through 6 years of it to get a BS and MS in Engineering

The way to solve all of these problems is to completely get rid of all majors that cannot pay their loan. If I graduate with a degree and cannot afford the education that qualified me for that job that is a useless major/area of interest.

Get rid of political science, communications, gender studies, and all other junk.

Doctors, lawyers, nurses, engineers etc have no problem paying back their student loans

The whole issue of student loan forgiveness was brought about by people who can't afford to pay back their education because they chose a useless major that pays them less than they could have made in a sensible trade

I am graduating with an MS in engineering with $0 of student debt. My parents/family did not pay for a dime of my education. I received scholarships that I worked hard to qualify for and paid the rest out of my pocket by laying brick on the weekends/summers

Gotta live up to the nickname...
