A male in breeding season , green tinged beak. They have only one monotone loud whistle that drives one crazy if they are in numbers.

If only they looked and sounded like the Black Headed Grosbeaks...who are beautiful singers.

They used to come to our winter birdfeeder by the 10..........20.............30 or more when I was a teenager. I haven't seen one in 30-40 years.

I've had them here in east-central Idaho for better than a month. Here's an adult pair, male and female.

one of the most difficult birds to band......that head can be a booble head PDQ and when that beak latches on to your thumb-forefinger skin; ouchey wawa
you have more than a blood blister.
Interesting recoveries some moving 1000 miles in one year.
Sunflower feeders are their down fall. But they can be trained to come at certain times;old folks put out their quart of seeds at 11;45 and at noon lunch serving they had 100 come in like clock work
