For some time I've been wanting to get a rifle built. With so many action, chambering, stock, barrel and trigger choices I think I've got it narrowed down.

After fondling a couple different actions I've decided none are as smooth as my old tikka m695. I found a great deal on another m695 in 300 wm to use as a donor action. I was leaning towards a 30-28 nosler, 28 nosler or a 26 nosler. Due to the tikka having a box mag I might have to rule out the 30 and the 28 because of mag length and no options of a hinged floor plate to accommodate longer heavier bullets. So I've settled on a 26 nosler. I think. Lol.

I'm not entirely sold on those carbon fibre barrels so I'm thinking a 28" benchmark with a 3 gill side baffle brake.

The rifle I bought has a beautiful wood stock that has some character marks that I might get refinished. Again I don't know for sure because there is a reasonable local stock making outfit named wildcat composite that I might go with. I also like those Boyd stocks as well.

I haven't gave alot of thought to the trigger but more then likely a timney.

My question are.
What am I forgetting?
Is there any advantage to a spiral fluted vs a longitudinal barrel?
Any recommendations is welcome

Thanks.

what is the planned use ?

I like to stop and think what is my use and if I am only thinking about that use what features do I want ?

build to the use

Be used for letting the air out of moose, elk and deer along with the odd coyote and rare wolf. I'd also like it to ring the steel across 880 yds. More or less planning on making it my do all.

Pete, yes I'm a reloader. Figure if I go with the 26 nos I'll be shooting those 156 gr bergers or 142 gr lrab's. Those 142s work good in the 26 I've got already.

Bucs I've got the action already but ya I know what you're saying. I've heard guys rebarreling their savages are getting some stellar results at a bargain price.

if you already have a 26 nos and dies and load for it , then sounds good

almost everything is capable of banging steel at 880 even the lowly 308

right now ammo and brass availability in the US and powder prices , I would error on the side of availability but that may not be an issue for you

an everything rifle to me is something not much over 8 pounds all ready to go hunting that you can carry all day.

I'm building a 30 Nosler now on a Savage action. Think it's gonna turn out good. Have to decide on a stock. Have everything else including brass.

Dont tear up the win mag. You already have a rifle that will work.

If the real use is you want a new rifle. One to show your other gun nut buddy's then thats a different story. I get wanting a new rifle just cause you want a new rifle. I am not your wife though. grin

What's everyone's thought on the new 6.8x51. Being a military round I'm assuming it will stick around. Ballistics sound like the 270 win but in short action. Will the our common actions handle the higher pressures? If they would I'd be intrested in some day pairing it with a 788 action. I'm a big fan of both the 270 win and the 788.

Thanks for the advice fellas. Is there any benefit to spiral fluting vs longitudinal fluting?

over the length of the barrel spiral gives a little more surface area

your basically doing 2 things with either

1 weight reduction
2 cooling

if you shoot more rounds in a string the greater surface area theoretically cools better , you might need some calibrated sensors to actually measure the difference between the two and time with bolt open would also play a factor

the reason most machine guns fire from an open bolt is that when your not firing the chimney effect cools the barrel

is the added surface area big enough to make a difference ,. not for hunting at least not for the cooling effect weight is much more easily measured

I have had alot of rifles built on the older Tikkas-M65,M658,M695 ETC..Still own them. Savage may be a decent action and guys are getting good results-but they are certainly NOT Tikkas. Stick with your Tikkas-way nicer action period for hunting or bench. The older Tikkas have metal clips as well-not the plastic that everyone uses these days. The big plus I always found with the older M65 Tikkas was a 4 round belted magnum clip vs 3 with everyone else's and 5 with the regular .270,06 calibers rather than 4.Beautiful solid wood stocks instead of the plastic stuff-never was a Tupperware fan.

Thanks Pete.

Mbcoon yes those older tikka actions are a thing of beauty imo. Smooth as glass I've found.

while I really appreciate a glass smooth action , the ability to mount optics the way I use them makes a big difference in a hunting rifle

I had a beautiful sporterized 1903A3 and smoothest action I have ever had even accurate , I sold if because at the time I could not find a good way to mount the optic where I wanted it a few years later an option to mount became available

by then I was carrying a 308 set up how I wanted and if it gets a scratch hunting oh well

the 695 has the mount to get that scope out where I would want it , but others don't have this need from a rifle https://www.egwguns.com/tikka-695-picatinny-rail-20-moa

Well, since you have decided on the 26 nosler, Ive had one since they came out with it years ago. I did alot of load development wtih it and can say that that hodgdon US869 powder or norma 217 gave the best results in my rifle in all bullet weights.

Pete, on my new rifles I've been using Talley one piece. Seems to be alot less variables to go wrong.

Ej I've had a browning hells canyon speed in 26 nos for a couple years now and it is quickly becoming my go to. I haven't developed a load for it because I found I can buy nosler factory 142 lrab for close to the same price as new brass. I've got a couple or 3 boxes of shells to go thru before I'll work on load development. I've got some retumbo, and some us 869 as well.

Have you tried those 156 gr bergers?
What are you finding for barrel life? Lots say she's a barrel burner and expect a new barrel between 1000 and 1500 rnds. No one can tell me what happens at 1501 thru it so I figure it's the needmore crew calling down a great chambering.
