Anyone use them in their gardens?, any type better then others?

Can't justify any expensive machinery for a hundred bucks worth of vegetables, if that, but would like to cut some of the labor..so, whattaya got?

The hoss tools is a copy of the old planet jr and all planter jr implements fit. The old ones are cast steel and better quality.

Get the pistol grip handles and plan to upgrade. Basically buy the hoss for the plate and wheel and add original implements when found. For handles check out the farmer brown plow website and look at the double cross bar handles with cross screw. You can modify what you got or buy new.

The hoss seeder is great for large seeds, a pia for small seeds.

BTW, I have two. A single and a double wheel.

The single is better for furrowing or hilling the double for weeding. If you hit the weeds early like you should the sweeps will do the trick. If bigger or grassy you'll need the duck feet cultivators to rip it out.

I’ll second the Hoss wheel hoe. I have the high arch so I can use it to hill corn and potatoes as well. It’s a little expensive, but seems pretty well made. I mostly use mine to cultivate between rows. Break it out after every rain to keep it as weed free as possible

Go old school/low tech, use a long handle hoe! Been working for several K years.

Yep, I have my grandmothers. Still use it, never leave outside, original handle still has whittled marks grandad put there for spacing rows and plants. But I plan to get a wheel hoe soon. Nice thread...

I learned to lay out everything with a hoe and did so for years. Furrowing, hilling, pulling up hills or raised beds all done by hoe.

A wheel hoe is so much easier and quicker, if the soil is good and loose, to lay out a furrow or to hill things up. A real time and labor saver. The only thing it can't do is to pull up as big a hill or as deep a furrow but thats an easy fix when needed.

both cut on the push and the pull slicing weeds off at the surface

I like a good sharp stirrup hoe for that. Can cover ground quickly.

I have a stirrup hoe I like the triangle scuffle hoe better with more surface area on the bottom it floats a little better and the handle angle adjusts the bite

it also gets close to plants easier

I have a Hoss tools high arch wheel hoe. I really like it for side dressing and hilling my beans and corn. I have the cultivators and the hilling shovels for it

When I was in high school during the mid 70's I put literally hundreds of miles behind a wheel hoe while working on Japanese truck farms in the Puyallup valley of western Washington. The fine glacial silt soil was ideal for wheel hoe work; I imagine rocky or clay type soils might not be so good for a wheel hoe.

Good memories, dirt clod fights, swimming in the river after work, flirting with the girls, and $1.65 an hour. Mr. Sagami used to deduct social security tax, however, I don't recall that he ever asked for our social security numbers. I have a hunch that money went towards his own "social security".

You would be right on clay. You either get to it on time or break out the chopping hoe when it comes to weeding.
