I'm thinking about getting a 6.5 Grendel on a AR frame and was wondering about what sight to put on it. Something lower powered but enough power to shoot 100 yards or so but low enough for closer range rapid fire.
I've come up with:
1. A Vortex 3x prism Red Dot. 2. A Leupold VX 1.5x4x20.
The Leupold might not look as cool as the red dot but its low power is better for fast shots and 4x power better for longer shots.
I'm leaning towards the Leupold. So if you've used either of these i'd like to hear from you.

Vortex 1x6 either the crossfire or the strike eagle. I have the strike eagle 1x6 on my 5.56. It has true 1x that illuminated only the center so you can run it with both eyes open like a red dot. On 6x I have no problem hitting 500yd targets
I have a grendel myself with a 3x9 vortex on it. I use it mostly for deer hunting. It is a deer killing machine. I've been overkill for a long time. You will be surprised what that cartridge can do.

LPVO low power variable optic
honestly you don't need magnification to shoot 100 yards but 2 power helps
a Vortex strike eagle 1-6 would let you do a lot really out toe 5 hundred fairly easily
the crossfire 1-4 is less money
I have a red dot on one right now , no problem at 100 but at 200 that dot , it is more of a burst for me I need to get to the eye doctor again and bring a red dot with to see if he can clean that up, is the size of a 8 inch plate
my son runs a holographic sight with a 3x magnifier and it makes near and far work quite well with the flip of the magnifier
I have the Prism in a 1X you can hit fine at 100 , a little harder to see at 200 nice part is if doesn't matter if you have a battery in/on or not you can use it in daylight without turning it on.
that is how the illumination works on the 1-4 1-6 and 1-8 also it is etched glass the parallax isn't as forgiving

Pete, at my age and eye sight I need some power to see a 8" plate at 100 yards. I might see it not aiming a rifle, but with open sights its not happening. No power at that range ain't working for me!

1x red dot and a magnifier is a good option for a 'defense' gun. I use an aimpoint that has a battery life of 50,000 hours for a red dot and a vortex magnifier 3x just came...not mounted yet.

it really depends what up close is and how fast you plan to up close
for hunting speeds 2-7x32 is right fast on 2x but you seldom are shooting 10 feet , then 10 yards then 70 yards and back again in 3 seconds.
so it comes down to what level of accuracy , how fast and how close
if your goal is 8" center of a man sized target at distances from across the room 10 feet to 150 feet and you need to go from target to target fast then red dot or 1x if your going to have to do it from all sorts of odd off balance weird angles and less than ideal shooting positions the red dot rules
if you need to then take that to 400-500 yards LPVO
if you really need to transition far near and do it fast LPVO with a open type micro-dot mounted on the 45 so that you make that shot at 400 then rotate the rifle 45 and clear everything inside 20 yards

I thought the 2x was fast till my son challenged me to run an Elprez with both I just spent too much time finding the target
I have shot a bunch of running deer from 15-125 yards with the 2x and I still think it is very ideal for hunting I am not switching out on my hunting guns with 2x scopes but when I am trying to run on a clock for composit score it isn't the tool

I guess I didn't say what this gun is for.
It's a old farts "TOY".
Just something new to take to the range and make some noise.
Something for quick close shots to take your time long range shots.
Will it ever hunt? Probably not unless I take yote hunting.

Primary Arms 1x6 or 1x8. You can choose from 3 different reticle. Awesome scope for the AR platform.
I own the Leopold 1.5x4.. Took it off after a few times out.

I am not a fan of red dots. Last two I had one I gave away and the other is on one of my boys air soft gun. For me they are OK up close but the brightness always seem sto need adjusting with changing light in walking in the field them going into a stand in the shady woods. Also they seem to want to star burst on me but that may be my astigmatism.
I put a 3x9 vx3i on my son's black out and have a 5.56 with a ta 31 acoustic on it. I prefer the vx 3 for hunting

Probably not unless I take yote hunting. 2-7x32 Vortex cross fire works well if your not trying to go fast close , have one on my 300blk AR and have shot plates , deer and it worked quite well , it just can't run the really fast close stuff the same way the 1-4 or 1-6 can or a red dot or a 1x prism but if you might take it coyote hunting the 1-4 or 1-6 with illumination would be good if in your budget the 1-4 is 199 but then you need a mount

I had an old bushnell with cross hairs AND a post. I now kick myself for giving it away.

I can't say I have used it much, but I have a Sig Romeo 5 on one of my ARs and. Leupold 3-12X on another. For fun practice and general shooting, the red dot is much lighter and more fun to shoot. For hunting/varmints, I'd go with the real scope.

Leupold 3x9x40mm with the CDS feature specifically for the cartridge, load, and bullet. Plus a tiny green dot at the crosshairs. I really like the scope and it’s features. I expected to like it considering every rifle and a couple shotguns have Leupold scopes.
The CDS is fun. Sight it in following the instructions. Then ranged some steel plates on different courses. Dialed the ranges on the scope and hit right on. Like the rig so well set up for wife another identical rifle with identical options and identical scope.
