As a harty New Englander (prepper) your choice of names. We installed a backup generator 6 years ago. I have over 10 weeks of propane on hand at any given time. I have a 500 gal propane filling station for my hot air balloon. This was my answer to relying on the grid. Prepper ia not a bad word or nut job. Plan for the worst hope for the best. Just be glad is warmer weather. Good luck Don LaFountain What do you need a hot air balloon for? Is it just for fun, or is there a "prepper purpose" to it?

Not sure I could handle a 4 day power outage. Good luck.
I got myself a seniors' GPS. Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination, it tells me why I wanted to go there.

I think the most we've gone was 7-8 days some years back when "Snowtober" hit. Ten inches of heavy, wet snow while the trees were still leafed out. We've had several 3-4 day outages over the last ten years and many twenty-four-hour-plus outages. I've had a Generac 5,500 watt portable generator for twenty-plus years that is used mostly on job sites with no power. When we have outages predicted to last more than a day I hook up the important stuff; fridges, freezers, coffee maker and internet.
Eh...wot?

We went 5 days once without electric, 10 years ago. Woke up after the storm and at 6:00am, the electric utility was saying 7 days until power would be back on. Getting around was a real problem because all the roads were blocked with downed trees.
I headed out with my chainsaw to cut a path to my local tractor supply. I was at my local tractor supply to buy a generator when the doors opened - with 30 other people. Everybody was polite and we all entered in the order we had gotten there. We all went back to the generator aisle using flashlights and there weren't enough and I didn't get one.
Through work, I do A LOT of business with one of the big box hardware stores. I called the manager and got secret information that a truck full of generators was arriving at 1:00. I was standing in the store waiting for that truck when it arrived - with 200 other people who also had secret information. I didn't get one.
We started driving North with my wife calling hardware stores along our route. They kept telling us there was some kind of big storm "down south" and they were already sold out.
We found one 100 miles from home. Buy one before you need one.

That sounds like the Snowtober event I described above maintenanceguy.
I was coming from camp in north central PA heading home to southeast with a trailer loaded with firewood. I didn't run into any problems until I was ten miles from home. Three were trees down everywhere. Plow trucks just shoved them out of the way wherever they could to open a single lane. It took me four hours to travel 200 miles and another two hours to travel the last ten.
Eh...wot?

Bought a 5500W generator two years ago. It can run on propane or gasoline. It's still in the box in the garage. I hope you guys don't suffer too much Cathy.

The Snowtober storm you are referring to is most likely a storm we had in Oct 27 2011 I live in southern York county PA .It was the biggest Oct snowstorm in my life time We had about 7 inches of heavy wet snow that covered the trees .Almost none of the trees had started to drop their leaves I only remember two other times that we had an accumulation of snow in Oct in my lifetime . Even though my county is not rugged like the northern tier of PA we have our share of multi day power outages Being prepared helps but after about the start of the second day of not having electricity stinks

Yeah, it was about ten years ago. I'm in eastern Berks. How long were you out of power down in York?
