When you say tanning oil I assume you mean a topical tanning agent that is applied to the leather side of a furskin to tan it,and not a leather lube oil that is applied after an immersion tan.
If the former,just rinse the skins and then pickle,then proceed with tanning.

The former is correct, Roger that! what would happen anyways if not pickled? My understanding is the pickling finishes off any bacteria that may be left over.

The pickle opens up the fibres and makes the tan penetrate the skin better.it changes the skin to make it more "tannable"
You can tan a skin without it being pickled,but you may or may not get good results.
Salting the skin is important if you choose not to pickle the skin before tanning.


Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.
