I heat with wood. When we built the house a couple of years ago we insulated over 2x code and sealed it up tight. We also had a masonry heater built in.
I heat my house with 2 1/2 cords for the season.

A masonry heater is a take off the Russian Stove from the 15th century, those old Russians knew something about heating in a frigid Siberia winter that us Americans should of copied instead of fireplaces and steel/iron wood stoves.

For the early fall or late spring when there is just one or 2 days that we could use some heat we have a air source heat pump powered by our solar panels, good old American ingenuity.

If you heat w/firewood and don't cut your own, get it now! Three loggers I know parked their equipment in the last month, can't make money with $7/diesel. This fall/winter is going to be a mess, no firewood and high fuel oil or even a shortage. Make sure your parents are loaded up.

One year ago I was selling tandem truck loads of firewood logs for $500. Loads sawed out about 15 face cords. I’ve been turning orders down because diesel fuel is too high and my logging equipment is sitting. I’ve been Brook trout fishing instead. If diesel stays at $6.40/gal. In my area, When I start harvesting again, i’m going to charge about $800 for the same load of logs, plus a fuel surcharge if the delivery is over 20 miles.
If diesel continues to increase, all bets are off what a load of firewood logs is going to cost ?

Ask local tree services for wood, I've been burning cords of it outside because no one will pay for anything but oak. I've been charging $100 for a 16 foot dump trailer full of random wood delivered which is basically my cost to deliver.

Donner we burn anything we can get our hands on here. Although many people wont touch softwood, The softwood comes free generally.

People here are picky, they won't take a load of silver maple dropped off for free at their driveway but they will go and cut up and carry a oak out by hand, goofy. When I'm home in the winter I like burning softwood, throws great heat just have to add a bit more often.

Good hardwood is fairly cheap around here from the pallet shops. The really nice part about it is there's no bark on it, no ashes.

Its fairly green so it's best to get it this time of year at least.
