Hello all, I am new and I see after some review that this question has been asked in some form or fashion a few times, but I still can’t get enough first hand experience. I am looking to start trapping again after stopping just as my grandfather started to teach me (he suffered a stroke that left him mostly paralyzed.) and I am looking for recommendations for how to get a quality line to cover everything from traps, stakes, the whole 9, as frugally as possible. I say that, yet I am not willing to sacrifice quality. For example, I see that the no bs k9 extremes and mb550’s are the top of the line k9 traps, so I’ve decided to get the k9 extreme jrs for my coyote/fox needs. For the record I want to trap everything legal in Ohio from weasels and skrats to coons and coyotes, likely most of it being on public ground unless I can get some places to go. Any input is more than appreciated! God bless!

I’m planning on it! I’ve been reading and watching videos like a madman as well, I just like to get personal experiences and tips, especially any bait/lure tips on the cheap, or odds and ends that I should have that most wouldn’t think about.

As Keith said, your best investment would be to go to the NTA Convention. Ask questions of everyone, watch lots of demos, talk to vendors. Take a note pad if needed and take notes, take lots of pics, make lots of friends. You will get all your questions answered at the NTA. Cheap is not always the best, get the best you can afford. Set yourself a spend budget for the NTA and try to stay within it.

What BigJoe said. Then when season opens, just get out there and do it. Experience will teach you much!

What happened to your grandads stuff? FWIW the best trap is a matter of opinion. To be frugal dont buy much. You dont need a lot of stuff to catch a few critters.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

You will learn a ton at the convention.

Basically you need traps, a way to anchor them (stakes, cable stakes, drags, drowners, in some cases even wire), a dirt sifter, and a hammer to drive stakes (and a stake driver if you go with cable stakes). That's really ALL you need to catch critters, although a few good baits and lures definitely will improve your success.

The good thing about going to convention is you can buy most of your traps used. Not sure if you'll find used K9 Extremes, but for your coon, rat, beaver etc., trapping, buy up all those good used traps. The best days to get good deals at the national are Wednesday and Saturday morning. But keep in mind MANY of the dealers and tailgaters will be gone by Saturday noon... so if you want something specific from someone best to buy it before Saturday.

Where do you live in Ohio? How old are you? I might be able to help you...

I learned a lot from Trapperman articles, convention demos, and my dog, who would alert to game scents.

Grandads stuff was all stolen by “family” when he was in the hospital after his stroke, everything from firearms and fishing lures to arrowheads and fossils were stolen. A lifetime of collecting, gone and sold.

Sorry if my posting seems odd everyone, this is the only forum I have been a part of. I just noticed it was a never ending sea of information, nowhere have I found as much information with as much detail about anything than here! I’m still learning! grin

A good trapper never stops learning. Your mind should always be like a sponge.

The archives are the best learning tool on here, and when someone sends you a private PM.

The NTA has a vey good book for sale which is geared to the novice trapper. It was written by Tom Kruse of Wyoming and is excellent. It is a very reasonable price. I would order the book from the NTA website asap and hopefully read it before the NTA convention.
Most state conventions have very good demo's too and lots of the demo presenters are will to visit with you one on one after the demo.
Good luck my friend.

You might not want to sink too much money onto gear if your going to trap on public land, theft is a major problem.

I would like to give some advice on anchoring traps. If you have any doubt that someone may attempt to take traps I would suggest using earth anchors, either wolfangs or similar. Cable attached to the anchor with several links of chain (#3) at the top swiveled to the trap chain. Any thief would need a good set of bolt cutters to remove the trap. They won't get the anchor out of the ground once driven in.

Lucky for me, my girlfriends father is a fantastic welder, I’m planning on making dozens of dirt anchors for dirt cheap! (Pun intended)

I have thought the same thing, I’m planning on getting mostly dukes for my 110’s and 1 1/2 double jaws for water sets, but some of the things I hear about their other traps worry’s me a bit…
