The prices the beef and pork farmers are getting at auction here are terrible. They are losing money on every head. The mostly foreign owned meat packers and grocery stores are making all the money on the farmer's labor and investment. Last week at Degraff, boar hogs were down to 1 cent a pound and sows and market hogs were very low too. Choice fat Angus steers have been paying barely over a dollar a pound for weeks.

Despite the price of rising prices in the grocery store cattle prices are stagnant to the producers. When it costs more to produce them then you get in return I guess you could call that a hobby. Most people only have hobbies they can afford, apparently they couldn't afford to have the hobby anymore.

government is buying them for 2300 bucks a head to bring on the nationwide food shortage
same reason 97 food processing plants/farms have burnt since Biden has been in office.

The slimmer margins benefit the huge operators and weed out the little guy,I would imagine like any other industry.

Several neighbors have sold off their heard and are now just crop farming. Most are close to retirement age and just want to scale back.

Pretty much every time that feed or other input prices go up, you almost always see a lot of dumping going on. Then the price of livestock falls. Vicious cycle. The farmers than can hold on long enough once the processing backlog is cleared might be able to reap the benefit.

What does the Gov have to gain from a food shortage, I don't doubt you, just don't understand.

Small dairy was killed by mega dairies with cheap illegal labor.

we just bought 1/4 a cow from our local butcher.
Small local farmer, small local butcher. No issues with supply.

Yes, we pay more than walmart but we know what we are getting and from whom.

When you sell out to the cheapest supplier you are in a race to the bottom.
Think about who your supporting when you buy from Big Ag.

I think there is a market out there for small producers who put out a quality product. They have to bring in as much control of the process as possible. The more they bring in and control the better off they are.

If you buy all your inputs and sell to the middleman you have no control.

if your competing with the big guys in the same game, change the game and you'll win.
Small farms that have various streams of income are better positioned to survive.

Its not the yeild/acre that matters, its the cost to produce that matters more.

Politicians receive huge amounts of money from the enormous, foreign owned meat packers for making it prohibitively difficult for any competition to start, that would lower their profits.
