This probably has been brought up before but I can’t find a definitive answer.
Is good 14ga cage wire strong enough for coons/groundhogs or do I need to go up to 12.5 gauge?
I built some cage traps out of cheaper 14 gauge stuff from tractor supply thinking it would be good enough but now have lost a critter. Hoping a better quality 14 gauge will do it as I can get a partial role from Klubertanz equipment. Is there anywhere else anyone gets cage wire from? Possibly that I could get a partial role of 12.5. Only need 30ft or so.
Thanks!

Go with the 12.5 then you do not have to worry about it.

Klubertanz makes very good wire. I have $4600.00 worth of their wire in one of my barns. I still think I would go with the 12.5 gauge for coons.

Depends on the mesh. If you're using 0.5x1" or 1x1 wire it probably doesnt matter much. 1x2...ive had groundhogs clip 14ga wires in the 1x2

In Ohio 14 gauge in good wire is fine .
You get up where the coon get to 30+ pounds , then 12 1/2 gauge is almost a given .
Yet plenty of coon have been caught in 14 gauge wire there also .
A 12 1/2 gauge trap is going to run 75+ % higher also .
Klubertanz is IMHO the best wire for cage traps out there .
I wouldn't be afraid to use a cage trap made with 14 gauge wire out west for any thing , with Klubertanz wire.
12 1/2 Gauge , you don't need much frame work .

If you build cages with rod doors you can use lighter wire as the coons always focus on trying to get out through the rods and they hardly ever work the wire. You wanna replace cage wire, build the door out of wire or something solid.

Riverdale wire is made in the US that’s what Klubertanz Stocks I’ve used the 1x2 12.5 for many years never had a wire break.
