So my friend lost her dad earlier this year and it been rough for her so we decided we to have lunch with her granddad . Well looking though all of the gun books her dad left me a I found this
[Linked Image]

Ended up being one of those scrap book deals you get in the military. I cleaned it up and we decided it would possibly be a good idea to give it to her granddad. He never really talked about his service much until I started coming by a few years ago when me and her dated so she thought I should give it to him. Honestly was a little concerned about what would happen but when I gave it to him , he was genuinely happy. He's 92 and lit of like a light.
He started going through it page by page talking about all the people he remembered , what training was like. Was actually super happy

Well then he just kind mentioned he got three bronze stars in Korea which surprised us and he went and pulled them out for use to see
[Linked Image]

Next thing you know he's pulling out photo albums and some of the absolute best quality black and white pictures ever and started showing us and talking all about Korea. Everything from the Dog on Base to calling in artillery to how they loaded shells...

I mean he even had the camera he took all these with

Spent probably five hours talking with him and trading army stories. It's crazy how its almost and 70 something year difference between our services and it's just like I'm talking to well ,any other guy who was in with me. He love comparing all what we did different.
Said " they gave us a M1a with 15rd what amount y'all ?"
I told him " well one M4 with one 30d mag in the gun seven on our vests so 210rd for a basic load out"
He just started laughing saying " Holy $&#@ ! One of you boy coulda held the whole line when them North KO reasons can down that mountain!!"
And boy when I showed him a paladin mobile artty piece you could have thought he saw a angle or something.
Asked if I could share some of the pictures with y'all and he said he'd be happy if I did so here we go lol.

It was fun to say the least.

Someday Donovan, you'll be an old man like him, sharing your experiences with a younger version of yourself. There's so much to be learned from experienced people who are willing to share. I learned a tremendous amount from 3 Korean War Veterans, Ralph Baker, Don Greider and Jim Trumbull, who shared a vast amount of time and knowledge with me. They are all passed on now and I miss them.

Cool story and a treasure that he is still alive and clear headed about it at all at his age.

I just flew through Korea twice recently and spent a day there sampling the food around the airport.

The city is huge . The airport was the nicest and most modern of all I ever been in.

Great way to spend some time and good for both of you. Likely all the fellows he showed in his photos are dead and his memories are about all that remain from their shared experiences, You will have helped him recall and relive some old times and he may have given you a day you can remember for the rest of your life.

My father in law served in Korea .He is now 91 and still doing well for his age Some of the pictures you posted look very much like pictures he has from his time there He is a far better man than I will ever be .About 12 years ago we went with him to Washington DC to visit the War Memorials. World War II ,The Korean War and the Vietnam War memorial. They are something to see .You will be humbled by how well the soldiers are portrayed

Dad was in WW2 and Korea. I visited DC and saw the Vietnam & Korean War memorial. The day I visited the Korean memorial it was snowing and the visibility was limited. It was the most eerie experience I’ve ever had. It appeared that squad of soldiers were coming at you out of the snow. That will remain with me till the day I die. God bless all our veterans, never forget.

You’re a good man Wolfie.

My grandpa served as a heavy machine gunner in the marines in Korea. He didn’t talk about it much. One thing he said that always stuck with me was he told me one time that killing a person from 50 or 100 yards with a rifle is easy….but it gets tough when you stab em in the chest in a knife fight and look em in the eye as you hear then gurgle their last breath.

Nice post---I was there in 68-69, was on a bus going to Camp Red Cloud with a guy that was there when the fighting was going said the place hasn't changed much. Still used animals to work the rice paddies, when I left hadn't changed. Never so cold as that place on guard duty. Used to get drunk with the house workers and the local kitchen help ate a German Shorthair kind of ticked off the CO!
