11:30 last night. I've never seen these two attack ANYTHING so viciously !!! The vet just called with an update. First dog is done. Estimated 600-800 quills. This is gonna be EXPENSIVE !!!

My gut feeling is they'd do it again tonight if they got the chance. Anyone have a method to break them ?? E-training ??

Dang!! One farmer's land I tried snaring on a few years ago gave me permission to use their land, with the exception that I shoot every porcupine that I see. Was told they spent thousands of dollars at the vet getting quills taken out of their dogs over the last couple of years! Hope your dogs mend up fine. As far as training them to avoid porkys....I'd guess that if all those quills don't do it, nothing will!

Looks like that one will be easy prey now shouldn't have much ammo left.

When I was 13 I shot a porcupine with my bow when deer hunting hit it in the neck and it got away. Now I'm In Indiana and we don't have them so my porcupine was actually a groundhog. It went into some brush and I didn't seenit come out. Probably went in a hole and died. It was a long shot for me and my equipment back them around 35 yards and I can still see it like it was yesterday. I still get teased by my cousin who was hunting with me that day.

I kill everyone I see. Not only because of what they do to dogs but they girdle my trees too.

Surprisingly, the porky has a lotta quills left on it. A lotta quills and a .380 slug.

Awesome now that's my language for all varmints around here. Actually any means possible club, feet, clips a coon last night with my truck on my way home from getting a swarm trap.

Everyone we see dies as they girdle trees especially our oaks.

I learned my lesson with them. I was hunting birds with a young dog and he came out of some cattails with a couple in his nose . I didn’t go in there and kill him because I was worried the pup might think we hunt them. Well the next season in the exact same spot he gets nailed and comes out and can’t even walked right. He had quills from his chest up and one had pierced a nerve that controlled one leg. Got him right to the vet and 2 surgeries later he came out ok. There was another dog in there that had quills removed the same day but he died a week later from one migrating they think into his heart. A year later one poked out the side of my dogs head. I kill them all.

Had a collie as a kid who always had run ins with porky. Dad would pull them out with his pliers while the dog squirmed around but she always went back for more. Porky where always in season on our farm.

I have always heard that it only goes two ways with a dog that has had a run in with a porky. One, they will attack everyone they see from now on. Or, they will never touch one again.

I caught one in a fox snare one winter. That’s when I learned they have small quills hiding under their fur around their neck.

I bet it isn't. I'm sorry your dogs had to go through this and that you're gonna have to pay a bill because of it.

Well..................vet called again.

Second dog is done. He "only" had 500-700 quills.

I was bracing when she gave me the bottom line. I was VERY pleasantly surprised !!!!!!!!! Total for both dogs (including the shots they needed updated on, Lyme tests, one dog's nails trimmed and all prescriptions) was only $907. I say "only".............but I was fully prepared for twice that or more. Thank the Lord !!!!

Small price to pay for our kids but it still stings! Glad they're aright.

I'm glad your dogs are okay and the vet bill didn't break the bank. Looks like they might be rottweilers? My daughter has a pair of rotties, knowing her dogs it wouldn't surprise me if they go after another porky.

My last four labs got nailed. Each one only once though. They avoided them after that.

500-700 quills? They must have gone back for more after the initial swat! My worst had 111 in his face and mouth. That was from a single swat. We were grouse hunting and I saw it happen.

As Yellowstone mentioned and I'm sure your vet told you, monitor for migrating quills although I don't think there's much you can do about that.

I got a twelve-week-old lab at home right now. I'm sure she'll get "christened" during the many upcoming upland hunts in north central PA. I'm glad we don't have them here in southeast PA.
