I do believe I could make it if it were just me but go support a family I don't think they would go for it.

It might mean getting your wife a third job. Having a wife with a third job means anything is possible.

I don't thing most of the guys who have successfully made trapping a full time job asked that question on here. They had the knowledge and confidence to know they could succeed.

I did it in 1984 and made a good living in the fall and winter for several years. I did other work and odd jobs etc. during the off season. Fur prices were about 10 times what they are now in today's dollars.

Quit your job of 25+ years, at 62 years of age and apply for social security. Providing that the job has a good pension, great healthcare benefits and your wife continues to work, you should be able to keep the losses as a Professional Trapper to a minimum. Of course, that is with a few "creative" tax deductions... grin

Its never the right time. I say go for it. I think if you can market ANYTHING today, you can sell anything. Look around online and you can see people are spending stupid amounts of money on some pretty dumb things (to me).

So, several months later I really did quit my job. I’m now a licensed contractor in the state of Michigan. Fur prices are low. I’m going to make a go at being self employed. I’m really wanting to spend more time on a fur trapline this fall/winter. I’d like to do a little state hoping. Not sure if that means this year or next. Basically, do what I want and live within our means. Yes, we. I’ve been married 25 years this month. I have been married to my best friend since I was 18. Two kids, one kid is making me a proud Grandpa in Sept. what an adventure this is.

You’d have to be single, or at least have no kids at home, live in an old camper you own outright, be in really good shape and not mind doing without nice things like healthcare. It don’t sound all that bad really. When the kids are grown I may make a go of it, but that’s 18 years away, who knows what will change by then.

There's a reason some pro trappers market their lure, books, and video's....Even when the market was good, making a living on fur alone took a heckuva lot of work.

Self employment isn't for everyone -- but it does seem to agree with me. If you are also like me - I have lived within my means my whole life -- no changes there. Sometimes ( once the kids are gone) there is a little money left at the end of the month. Congratulations -- My only suggestions are to keep up on your Billing and watch your cash flow -- seasonal businesses have lots of problems with that. My biggest problem is health insurance (thank-you obamacare). You might want to look at alternate income streams that don't corespond with your main business focus.

No problem at all if you want to shuck off all the trappings of modern society.
Move to an rtl up north with family and live like they did back in the 40's
It wasnt an easy life then and would be a hard life today for anyone wanting to take it on.
Food off the land is no problem, heat with wood, and sell fur in the spring for staples like flour sugar and salt, tea and coffee shells etc.
No one wants to live that life anymore.Although some still live a partial life like that.
Trappers who lived like that back in the day home schooled their kids. The kids looked forward to spring rat trapping as they got a bit of a break from their studies.

Many of the WW1 and WW2 that did not want to be drafted, moved off grid and lived that life as Boco says.
During my time I meet several that did it that way. They did live until their late nineties. During the bitter cold of winter they moved into a hotel, cause at 85 you could not gather enough firewood to get you through. Two men were the best fiddle players that were invited to many a wedding to play if they were around.

Sure you can survive with fur as your exclusive means of income.

But you had better of already made your wealth elsewhere! Can do whatever you want if you already got a few million socked away!

Or your spouse is well heeled in the job department. What’s the saying, “it’s a lazy man that can’t find his wife a second job”.?

Lots of families still wintered in the bush on traplines here right up til the mid 80's.The native families moved to their goose camps out on the bay or along the swampy lakes in the lowlands in April when they came out of the fur country and traded their fur. After that they went to their fishing camps up the Moose river tributaries.
A lot of the non native trapping families had commercial fishing licences on the rivers or bigger lakes for pike and sturgeon.Others went to work for outfitters or were outfitters themselves for sport fishermen in summer and sport hunters in early fall before trapping started again in november.
Very few live that way today.
