Asking my fellow new york trappers, this will be my second year trapping and just wondering if anyone has any recommendations as to good brands of lure for yotes. I’ve dabbled in a couple of mark junes and Dunlap coyote lures but only had foxes coming into my sets.

Mind you I’m setting on coyote tracks, scat and sign.

There are two I ALWAYS have in my bag…Minnesota Red and Feline Fix. May just be a Southern thing I don’t know, but those two always produce on both coyotes and bobcats. And both catch each species.

I’m not a fox trapper, like em too much to target them. Seems every dirt hole set last season had a fox visit the set and dig up my bait/lure. I had a nice big male red in a pipe dream set but let him go.

Trying to find something that works well on yotes but not that much of an appealing lure for foxes. I want my sets to make it without getting tore up by foxes. Since I set my trap back far enough from the dirt hole they’re able to work the sets hard but not fire the trap. Besides that one male and he had to be working that pvc pipe real hard

Increase your pan tension is what they say on here a lot. I’m out to catch whatever investigates, but Reds do get released. Only catch maybe one a year and releases are at my discretion.

I keep my pan tension on my coyote traps at around 4 lbs, a little heavy but was still able to catch a few nice boar coons in my yote sets last season.

About 8 to10 inches back and off set 3-4 inches
Almost always end up with fox tracks in between trap bed and dirt holes/post

It's going to be hard NOT to have reds visit your canine sets no matter what lure or bait you use. If I were to try something I'd try only coyote urine

That might be where I’m going wrong, I use a decent amount of fox urine on my line to try to trigger a territorial response at a dirt hole. I used yote urine at post and flat sets and done really have issues with foxes at those sets, but then again still didn’t catch a yote either. Maybe it was just low quality urine? Fnt brand coyote urine and Dunlap hot shot was what I was using. What’s a good urine brand in your opinion?

I have some sitting in my cart on FNT. Saw some trapper videos at conventions about reuwsaats and heard a lot of good stuff about their strict meat diets and wondered if it’s just their marketing or if it really is that good. I’ll pick up a pint and give it a shot. Thank you!

It doesn't seem to matter in my area (Central PA) what gland or urine you are using. I have caught coyotes day after day, and the next catch is a red. Just continue to set on sign and it will happen. I used a lot of Top Dog preditor bait from Hoosier trapping supplies and cought lots of coyotes, fox and cats last year. Agree keep your pan around the 4 pound range, and I also prefer a step down dirtholes. Feet are always touching the pan when caught. Good luck!

I’ll have to check out top dog, I use F&T because they’re competitive prices and fast shipping and good customer service. How is Hoosier?

Hoosier might be a wisker more and I only mean a little bit. Great people, you can call them up and talk to Charley. Fnt sells top dog it's under leather woods baits. They have some really good YouTube videos also. Check them out. Just keep making solid sets and it will happen. Also, I know this will stir the pot but I set right in front of the hole on a dirt hole. Not saying it's right or wrong but for my line I continue to catch what's working the hole. Pipe dream sets I stay back 8-10" and that seems to work fine for that particular set. The biggest thing is once you start catching a few, do what is working for you. Good luck!

I know the biggest appeal to me last season was that Fnt had a set shipping price, so with big orders it worked out great. I noticed the past few weeks I’ve ordered and the shipping is no longer that set price. But I’ve already developed a trust with the website and I love how fast they ship and I get the items usually in 3 business days.

As far as available product it seems like Hoosier has a bit of a different line up of products available. But I’ll try out the leather wood bait for sure. How does it handle in sub freezing temps? I noticed the milligans chunk bait froze pretty fast and the Hiawatha valley quickly lost that strong scent in rainy conditions.

I think I took all the trapping course and instruction too serious and figured that if it wasn’t working then it was something I was doing. I think more of it has to do with adapting and changing and that’s something I’m adjusting to as well. I’ve noticed it’s the outside of the box thinking that helped me with coons last season, just need to apply the same mindset to yotes. Even watching old Tom Miranda trapping videos I’m seeing that what we learned in the trapping course and what actuall works is completely different.

I only commit to making coyote sets on sign. Coons a little different, but for yotes I’m setting on trails with heavy tracks and scat, but further more setting where it’s fresh sign. Unless I’m finding this sign on the end of their cycles in the area, I can’t set on any more sign then I already am.
