Just read an interesting article where Elon Musk made the claim we are now ruled by a gerontocracy. A gerontocracy is rule by elders. When you consider the median age of Congress and Executive is well over 70 he may have a point.

The odd parallel is the Politburo of the Soviet Union in it's last years was also a gerontocracy. Only changing in 1985 under Gorbachev but by then it was to late as the USSR collapsed just over five years later.

SCOTUS on the otherhand with it's recent additions under both Trump and Obama are well under the median age of the other two branches. Maybe one of the reasons they seem to be more active of late.

With a bunch of geriatrics making the decisions for the future of the country... what could possibly go wrong.

Maybe this is the problem with all gerontocracies: They have all been in power for decades because their #1 goal is protecting their own power. I don't think it's the age of our leaders that is the problem - with age should come wisdom. The problem is that they reached that age by creating a system where you can't get rid of the bad ones. The party holds the purse strings and decides who wins elections. They, of course protect those who are part of the party.

It's a symptom, not a cause of our decline.
