I have a Ruger M77 chambered for .22 Hornet. It is one of the first batch that came out. I cannot get it to hold a group. It throws bullets all over the target.

I am shooting hand loads: Hornady 45 gr. soft point "Hornet" bullets powered by 9.5 gr. of Winchester 296. I have tried different brands of bullets with the same results. I have shot these same loads out of a H&R model 157 single shot, and they were dead on at 100 yards.

I have heard that the first ones had barrel problems. Was told that they had the wrong twist rate. Is this true? Does anyone know what that twist rate was, and what is the proper twist rate is supposed to be?

I also had one of the first shipped out. Had a vx-1 on it tried everything. It also would not group. As you said mine was everywhere.Read a lot of bad reports about the first ones. Finally sold it and got a 221 fireball. One of the few guns I got rid of and never regretted.

1 in 14 is pretty common for a 22 hornet. put a nice tight patch in your cleaning rod. stick it in the breech till it starts to turn. mark the rod at the breech. put another mark top dead center by the handle. push the rod in till it makes one complete turn watching the mark by the handle. then mark it at the breech again. push the patch on out. pull the patch off then remove the rod and measure between the two marks you made at the breech. then you will know your twist rate.

shoot some factory ammo. if it shoots significantly better than your hand loads you know its a reload problem

Google ruger 77/22hornet bolt shims. Some claim it is the 2piece bolt that is possibly the problem. I have one that was rechambered to 22K-hornet and it shoots well.

Do some research on using Lil Gun powder and the Hornady 35 gr Vmax bullet. Accurate combination. I'd also try placing a washer between the stock and action at the front action screw, poor man free float. I hear good things.
