Someone a year ago or so built some raised beds up off the ground for their wife. Anybody remember who that was? Just wondering how it's working for them.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

My daughter has one that is doing great so far. She had a back operation a couple years ago and if not for the raised bed, about 3' high, she wouldn't garden.

I also made 2 of these for the wife. One has her potted herbs and the other has window boxes of salad greens.

I have been planing on putting some around the outside of our garden as a type of fence. But I worry about how long tell they rot, and it's a lot to fill in with good compost.

I saw a company selling gard rails on lime and thought they would be perfect for raised beds. I lost the linke and didn't buy any. I think they would be great for strawberries and bush beens.

I thought about making some using concrete blocks - should be here after i am long gone. I have some thirty inch dia tubs I plant in - they are a challenge to provide enough water. I have heard raised beds require a lot of water because they dry out a lot faster than in ground. Dont know it that is true or not.

If you made the raised beds a little lower , she would not need the steps

I would agree, we water ours pretty regular.

We're moving to Arkansas and I discovered that I can't dig in the ground there because it's all rock so there's a new game plan.
My eldest son Bridger used old railroad ties for a raised asparagus bed and strawberry. They work very good.
I'll rent either a skidloader or mini-ex, dig the rocks out about a foot deep and do a massive composting operation.

My brother used old railroad ties , they worked the first year , then everything died the next .
I use concrete blocks , you can make them as high as you want .
Like someone mentioned above , yes they dry out fast !
I like to put fertilizer deep in the hole I plant in , cover with soil and plant the plant or seeds above.
In the theroy the roots will grow deeper .
Still have to water often , but the plants grow a lot better .
You can weed and work in the garden sooner in the spring, and even after a heavy rain .

That's a whole different style , but love the concept !
Soil needs to be deep enough for what you're growing .
Drainage is a must .
Water at least once every other day , more often in very hot dry weather .
Morning and evening.
Just enough for a good soak , make sure it gets down into the soil.

I figured to help needing less fill and with water retention I would fill the bottom with old logs. They will some up water, take up space and rot down into rich soil.

This is one of 9 I built for the wife. This one has bush beans in the front and climbing beans in the back. Each box is equipped with a soaker hose.
