Hard worker, lots of ground to work, some basic knowledge of what you are going after, fuel would be your biggest expense in this economy. Balance your fur trapping with ADC work and it can be done. Fur trapping alone would require being creative beyond normal auction houses and fur buyer sales. Establish specialty markets and fur trade items to be sold in the slow times.

A wife or partner can help in this lifestyle as well if there is an interest to do so.

Learn how to make things that are novelty items and popular to a segment of the population. Selling on Ebay and other Online stores will net a good business over time. Someone can make a decent living with creativity and drive.

The first thing you got to do is...mix up a concoction of chicken fat and tainted bovine after birth, and boil your traps in it. That will get the critters digging properly.

How's that trapping pension going for you? Any paid holidays and paid vacations. You should hire Coonman. He is probably ready to change jobs and find a new address. His truck is already coated in Fluid Film so it will be dependable.

trapping is like most businesses. The money is not in selling raw materials. The most money is in capturing as much as you can of the whole process from raw material to finished product and then selling direct to consumer.

Its a bad business model when you are selling a raw material that is not rare and your selling to the middleman. The middleman can control prices as the sellers are all fighting against each other to sell their goods.

It depends on how many frills you need to makenyour.life complete.

So.e people..lime Jerry and i...don't have to have a lot to make ot but .
Let's face it more money males things easier...specially on the mind.

Figure out how much you need just to break vet with.ypur bills and go from there.
Our bills run 800.00 a month.

But our house and vehicles are.paid for...

This year..with alot of.creative marketing on my part...Jerry made 30,000 on his.fur...he had 8000.00 in it so he cleared 22,000.00.

He's retired now so that's why we do the ramps and things..so he'll have the leeway to trap.

It depends da on..likening said...the f.rills and things you want or need. If you have children at home also would weigh in on the calculation.

It can be done.even In today's market

Waive marketing could with self reliance can make it happen but most people wouldn't be happy living the modest life that they would be required to live

I guess I did it bassakwards. I worked until I was financially independent enough so I couild afford to trap! Ihave been keeping rough records and reviewing older tax forms etc. I have grossed about $135,000 over 42 seasons of trapping as an adult. I had a social security paying taxable profit from my Schedule C 14 of those years, most very small. I was not trying to lose money. The last 5-7 years I actually don't spend much on equipment etc. as it is almost impossible to get even close to even.

That's exactly what I did in the early 1980's -- quit my job to trap full time. And it worked out well for a few years. But fur prices back then were about 10 times what they are now and it was tough to feed a family on the income back then. Being a commercial fur trapper is a thing of the past I'm afraid.

While giving a demo Red O’Hearn said he heard people all the time say I would like to trap full time. He says quit your job and get after it, starvation is a great motivator.
