Every once in a while, around my area a whopper will turn up. Mostly small and crooked. But they do hang heavy with berries.

I'll leave some black cherry, but they are coming in way too thick & are impacting oak regeneration.

We planted 3500 about 6 weeks ago.

Norway spruce
Colorado blue spruce
Canaan fir
Fraser fir

But we have a Christmas tree farm, so.......................

How do you keep the deer out of the fir?

We just sold a few truckloads of some we planted back in 83. Got top dollar, too. The buyer told dad he didn't think there were that many poles left in the county.

Seems there a shortage of poles.

If I planted Frasier fir, I'd have to fence them.

My time has come and passed for timber plantings, but I used to be a member of the NNGA (north American nut growers association) and read all their quarterlies. Out of that I had concocted the idea of planting a stand of multi-purpose black walnuts. Was going to plant seedlings and then graft on a timber species down low. (There was one I knew of that had purple heart wood), then I was going to graft on a nut species at about 8-9 ft and have a canopy of nut producing trees while keeping a straight timber bole for the future (probably my kid's).

Maybe some younger guy on here with the land and ambition will do it. If so, reach out for more particulars...

NNGA..interesting. I've never heard of that group.

I mis spoke. Northern Nut Growers Association. They started out in 1910 with a contest for best nut quality black walnut. $100 first prize. From that contest we still have at least three named black walnut cultivars. The idea was to save superior genetic material before all the woods got cleared for agriculture.

I wonder if they deal w/ chestnuts and hazelnuts. I'm trying to grow some chestnuts for deer.

Do any of you know much about the difference between 2-0 and 2-2 bare root trees? I normally buy the smaller and less expensive 2-0. I got a deal this week from a nursery that was closing out it's large white spruce. Do I plant the 2-2 trees about the same as the 2-0 (i e. similar tool/technique)

I caged my 1st plum tree today. My 6 american plums I planted this year (bare root from Paint Creek Nursery) are doing great. The trees were only $1.75 each but the price of metal posts is killin me
