I thought about getting out in April to collect some tails but never did. The state is wrapping up the program for the year. Out of the 49,400 tails turned in so far, 72.5% were coon, 13.4% were skunk, 12.3% possum, and 1.8% reddies & badgers (combined). I think the percentage of coons is down this year than a couple of years back when I think the tally was about 85% raccoon. More people must be reading Law Dog's pepe exploits and figuring out how to get the tails without all the stink . https://sdgfp.maps.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/e7bbbd6fa93b48c6a31985aa7c57c5ff

Seems kind of silly that you can only submit 59 critters per household.

I believe it was $10 again. The first year it was $10, then it went to $5, I didn't keep track last year, and now I think it was back to $10.
yotetrapper- That limit was put on so the state doesn't have to send out a 1099 IRS form to anyone. I think those start at $600.

This year it was $10 per tail the kids got a month head start as introducing youth and families to trapping is a big part of it. They need to move it up to start in February to take advantage of the breed activities for the skunks and coons. By mid March things slow down and April/May/June were dead with little movement by then.
Yes the 59 tail limit is set so paperwork needs are kept down to avoid eating up the funding with red tape requirements to please the government.

Skunks are done here by then no big rush on coons that I ran into I pick up a few now and then but the skunks were hot and heavy then just dropped off to zip! Do find pockets of trouble coons but nothing like the skunks I target.
I tell my 4H students to think about buying a small freezer since they have little interest/experience/supplies in putting up furs.
