Been finding a bunch of spicebush swallowtail caterpillars in and around our native plant nursery this summer. Super cool insects that have several cool predator avoidance adaptations. I made a video about them which I will link:

https://youtu.be/AOwM5edypcA

I also made a video about one of their most common host plants, the spicebush. Also a great shrub if you are wanting to attract songbirds as they love the bright red berries.

Hope you enjoy them!

Northof50 - Thanks for the sub!

Not sure why it froze up on you, I just watched it to make sure it was working and it played through. Could have just been a YouTube glitch. All of the video clips were shot by me on our farm and in our native plant nursery.

Black swallowtails are beautiful butterflies too! And they have very distinctive caterpillars also, and like all swallowtails they have an osmeterium that they expand when threatened.

Anyone seeing monarch caterpillars? Usually find a few by this time of year but nothing so far. Only a couple milkweed tussock moth caterpillars too which is very strange for around here.

Saw the first adult Monarch last week almost a month late coming up here. The common milkweed is just starting to form flower buds. Swamp milkweed is just going to set forth and bloom.
I shall try to re-watch the clip.

Common milkweed is more or less done here. Starting to see some spicebush swallowtails again now that all the caterpillars are pupating. Tons of fritillaries of several species, some sulphers, and red spotted purples. Haven't seen many tiger swallowtails lately but figure they will be back as caterpillars mature. Very few monarchs around this year.

Got a bit of rain yesterday and our cup plant patch seems to have gotten the urge to bloom. Once they flower it will be butterfly city out there.
