I went with a friend today for a hike.

We went to a preserve that was once a iron mine complex. There are a bunch of trails and we covered 3 1/2 miles on medium to hard terrain. Lots of hills and rocks. A bit of a workout.

There are artifacts there to view. This blast furnace dates back to 1865. ( people for scale near red brick structure)

There are more structures , mineshafts , very narrow gauge railbeds and old quarry work areas. Some of the mineshafts are grated off for safety and to protect bat habitat. One of the drifts leading out from the shafts has a very cold breeze that flows all the time. Almost 40° cold. Today was 82° here. You could not stand in front of this drift for more than a minute or you start shivering. Kinda cool and it is always like that.

Also as a nice bonus , we got to see 2 owls about 1/2 mile before returning to the trailhead. Owls are kinda rare here , so you don't see them much. Always a gift to see them here.

I'm pooped , but had a good hike. grin

That's really cool. I would think I went back to medieval times if I found something like that in the woods.

Poor people have poor ways.

Cool, but that's a Kiln, not a blast furnace. Iron ore was placed in the upper part, and a fire built under it to change the structure of the ore, then when fired again the liquid iron would run into a collector to be forged into whatever. Same process with limestone to make Slaked (Ag) Lime.

Every kid needs a Dog and a Curmudgeon.

Remember Bowe Bergdahl, the traitor.

Beware! Jill Pudlewski, Ron Oates and Keven Begesse are liars and thiefs!

Agree, lots of old lime kilns in my area, Seems about every other farm had one here.
