I don't know if anyone here " picked " fruits and berries in rum. I use a large mason jar ..... I think this one os about a gallon or so. Just add fruits and berries as the season progresses and keep it topped off with rum and a bit of brown cane sugar. Tases great over vanilla ice cream around Christmas when its ready ..... So far I have straw berries wild raspberries and blackberries in there .... got to get some cherries next

Must be a German thing. I recall that it was very good when I sampled some in Germany.

According to Wikipedia, it is indeed a German /Austrian tradition. I'm assuming clear rum as opposed to spiced?

I made a batch for the first time last year. Not rum, grain alcohol.

For some unexplained reason the result was very salty tasting.

Dark or black rum but not spiced.

Its full of fruit so it must be healthy.

Is that also called a Rumtopf ? This was decades ago, but I somewhat recall my Grandmother mentioning something called a Rumtopf (SP? ) , Her Mom brought the recipe with her ; when she came here from Germany

Never heard of this. Since most of my ancestry is German I feel compelled by my long dead ancestors to try this. Thanks Scuba!

Yes it is the same. Topf means pot in krautish.

My Dad had gallon jugs of rum and whiskey with cherries in it out in the shop, probably from the 1940s-50s.
Me and my brothers had it pretty watered down in the '70s, lol.

That's why I would leave out the ice-cream and just sip-it... even healthier then. grin

OK, another year has gone by, and I stumbled upon my stash.

Still way to salty, I did this stuff my own way, without a recipe, and had really only infused the fruit in the alcohol with no sugar.

Throwing the stuff out would constitute alcohol abuse, so I decided to doctor it up a bit.

Mixing it part for part with honey simple syrup took all the rough edges off.

Having a nightcap right now.

Don't even need the rum.Just the jar. Keeps berries fresher longer just keeping them in a mason jar in the fridge.
