I have looked into buying a commercial freezer quite a bit.
Some commercial freezers have an Energy Star rating, are fairly efficient and are around 20% more efficient than a regular commercial freezer,
Since commercial freezers are usually frequently opened, they have anti-sweat heaters installed. Disconnecting or turning the sweat heater off, improves efficency.
I currently run 3 large chest freezers, 2 refrigerator/freezer combos, as many as 5 incubators and a lot of brooders all year and my electric bill is high.

I use a commercial freezer for our organic fruitcicles. It has a large motor and compressor on the top and uses a lot of electricity. For efficiency the older chest freezers are much better, but then again I needed to get down to -20F. Not something that an ordinary chest freezer will do.

I drug home a newer commercial Frigidaire stainless upright a few years back from a commercial kitchen we were demoing at work to replace my older 4' chest freezer. I can't remember exact numbers but my electric bill went up alot, I bought one of those plug-in electric meters to monitor it and decided to get rid of it. Got enough out of it to buy the biggest residential upright Lowes had at the time and the electric bill came back down. Thanks, that was what I was afraid of.

It's good that the motor etc is on the top, helps keep the inside cold, but chest freezers are far more efficient. IMO: 2 smaller units are better than 1 large one. Less chance of a catastrophe. I went down to my freezer in the basement to dig out some meat for BBQ and found it had died. On a Sat night, had to wait till Mon am to buy a replacement, saved everything, but I was sweating bullets for a while.
