Mine gets anywhere from about 16.5 to 20 mpg, depending on how you drive. If you take it easy on the highway and drive 55-60 mph it will do 20 all day long. If you get on the interstate and stay ahead of traffic it’s about 16-17. I do have 10 ply tires on mine so that eats some of my gas mileage. Loading it up also affects mileage.

08 Tacoma. Regular cab, 4cyl 5 spd. 100K. I get about 18 in town and 24 on the hiway no matter how heavy it’s loaded. Likes- short wheel base. Hand crank windows. And it’s been reliable. Dislikes-lack of power. Should’ve got a 6 cyl as mileage is similar. Hard to sleep in the small cab. No intermittent wipers. Issues I’ve had are a leaking axle seal. Turn signal failure that turned out to be a manufacturer defective wire . All in all happy with it

Maybe I should have got the 4 cyl, I put on around 35,000 miles a year.
That 6 miles per gallon better adds up.

on long, flat highways, I've gotten up to 21 mpg with my 4 cylinder five speed.

I had a Tacoma many years ago, it was a great truck for trapping and couldn’t get stuck off road, however also couldn’t get out if it’s own way on the highway and was about useless for hauling and towing. I got lucky in a manufacturer recall/buy back so chit canned it. Tried a Tundra for a few years however fuel mileage was too low so lost it. Guys working out of a minivan or outback or whatever are not doing the same type of work as those of us that have a full size truck.

Good Lord, my full-size Silverado averages right at 22 mpg. I would hate to downsize and get worse mileage! I think that's one of the reasons I went that direction in 2018, after looking at and test driving the Tacoma's. Well, that and there is no comparison in comfort, power and hauling capacity.

Most vehicles, regardless of make or model will drop in mileage once you get 60-80K. The rings and other engine components start to get loose and your mileage will drop.

Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

but reliability/longevity goes to Toyota...you can't have it all, it seems.

pick what's important to you.

I got a full size Ram and get 23-24 trapping with it and it has 219000 miles on it, never could see getting a small truck and paying more for fuel.

The ball joints tend to blow out on Toyota Tacoma's. So much for reliability. You see them broke down beside the road fairly regular. Tons of Tacoma's in my neighborhood.

Toyota makes a good truck. My father n law, just bought one, about a month ago. It has all the frills and bells! I just drove it to the ranch yesterday! I’m 6.2 and 245#. I think I will stick to my full size truck!! He got rid of a full size Toyota. He will regret it when he needs to pull or haul something!!

In 722,000 miles, I've never had a ball joint blow out. I've replaced them twice when they started squeaking. I think it was the generation after mine that had ball joint problems.
