Almost enough to make a guy wanna cry................
It's our state bird and is functionally extinct here, where, once (20-30 years ago), they were EVERYWHERE.

That seems to be a thing, high turkey population low grouse population. Turkeys are holding their own here locally. Not the same story in a lot of places...............both in PA and nation wide. But back in the heyday of grouse hunting here, there were also turkeys. Our game commission blames it on West Nile virus. I'm not a scientist/wildlife biologist............so I don't know. Not sure why the virus would decimate one gallinaceous bird and not another. I do know that the avian predators that kill grouse are NOT in short supply. Happy trapping is coming. Hoping to be retired when season opens. So it'll be the first time in YEARS that I'll be able to go all in on it. My goal is to eradicate every last nest predator and a good chunk of the foxes and coyotes along the way.

Plenty in the area of the Northern Lower I frequent. appreciate that but if I get below the bridge then I might as well go spend time with the family. The plan is the west end of the U.P, Escanaba would be as far east that we're talking.
