An old timer duck decoy carver from around here, now picking turnips from a step ladder, used to say, "Duck carving ain't that hard to do. All you need to do is remove everything what don't look like a duck."
He would start with a block of wood and rough it out with a hatchet. When I say 'rough it out', I mean that it looks like a duck already, but just needs some sandpaper work, and paint.

Yes, that's what the old masters used to say also, about their paintings and marble statue carving. Sounds easy enough

But for me, I have had to plan every line, curve, angle in my head and HOPE I get it out of the material I'm using. I have so wanted to say , " I know you're in there, I just need to remove the outsides and let you aloose !"

I am still wanting Newhouse to see Tatiana's work here. It's always fun to listen to artists speak among themselves about their work , comparing thoughts and ideas. JR , who does wonderful work in metal and antlers. And exchanging ideas on tools.

Surely they have some other sort of experience, such as a tattoo or drawing artist. I just can’t imagine average-joe or average-Jane stepping up and their first attempt being so incredible. It’s certainly possible, just hard to understand if so.

There is a fellow in our trappers council that carves moose antlers.

Also a couple native people local that carve antler and soapstone.
