The angle in the picture is a bit deceiving. It is a lot closer to parallel with the ground than it looks. Only a slight bend upward.

I am not a big circle hook fan. I quit using them. Yes I tighten down the casting control to prevent back lash and leave the spool released. Don't use the clicker either. Pick up the rod, turn the crank to lock it, let it tighten up a bit and set the hook.
