Depends if you are fur trapping or nuisance trapping.

I like fairly light pan tension for beaver.Proper setting/bedding/guiding is much more important in my opinion.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

I run tension heavy. Haven't checked it but it's at least 5 lbs. I know how the correct tension feels I've done it so long. Rarely check actual tension.
I use beaver footholds in trays (unless I have a firm sandy bottom) so there is no trap bedding needed and that light tension will get you a toe catch. I want him crawling all over that trap without it firing until he hits it just right and buries that foot in it.

Never caught a beaver toe in decades.Weak trapsprings or poor trap placement cause toe catches in my experience.

[quote=8117 Steve R]Depends if you are fur trapping or nuisance trapping. [i]I guess I've been doing it wrong all these years then . . . I know I have missed small kits on nuisance jobs if my pan tension was too high, and I don’t want to catch the small ones when I am fur trapping. But you do it your way and I will do it mine.

I like pan tension too, but if I have the adults caught I will back it off.
