Looks like a fast growing tree. They are, and are the primary species grown across the south. My family has over 300 acres of it planted. I and the missus put a good many of them in the ground ourselves. It's a pioneer species and reseeds everywhere.

Up in the lowlands some of the scrub spruce in the muskeg are 300 years old and are only an inch in diameter and maybe 3 feet tall. Need microscope to count rings.

Looks more like 13 inch radius than diameter. Just optical illusion I guess.......jk

Up in the lowlands some of the scrub spruce in the muskeg are 300 years old and are only an inch in diameter and maybe 3 feet tall. Need microscope to count rings. That stunted black spruce grows so thick it seems a bunny would struggle to fight its way through it. This one looks to be somewhere between eighty and a hundred years old. The rings are so tight you need a very sharp saw and a magnifying glass to accurately define them. Took it off a friends property in North Pole.
