Over there.
Have replaced the BMW as the status symbol. They fill em with stuff ya don't need so they can jack the price up. I want a truck that just does what it's supposed to, be a truck. And to do at a reasonable price. Rant over. Lol.

I'm with you 100%!
Most new trucks never leave the pavement, I think.

Yep, even the work truck packages are getting too fancy. I don't need traction control and hill start assist in a work truck.

I do like some of the things they have in them ... like cruise control on longer trip. Engine brake when towing helps save brake pads, AC is nice in the hot month's Extending mirrors for a better view and backup camera to hitch up trailers.
I guess as I get older I like a few creature comforts.

Yes, highly frustrating. Only a couple manufacturers even make a manual transmission pickup anymore. First thing I do to a truck when I get it is replace that piece of plastic with a real bumper. I don't need a backup camera, that is what mirrors are for! And you can't buy a truck will roll up windows and manual door locks any more, those electric things always fail after a few years of bouncing down dusty, washboarded gravel roads.

Scuba,
We typed at the same time. I will give you that backup cameras can be helpful to hitch up to a trailer, in my opinion the only thing they are helpful for. Extended mirrors are something that used to be standard on full size pickups, now we get the fancy electric ones that go in and out and always break, and yeah a compression brake is nice, but you used to get about the same thing with a manual transmission, and guys have been putting them on the diesel pickups that hauled serious loads since the 80's.

I wish they still came with wing windows and gutters. Otherwise I find many of the latest features to be useful.

I'm running on borrowed time on my daily driver. One thing for sure when it comes time to buy I ain't buying new. I can easily afford to but I hate all the junk on new vehicles.

I'd buy a new truck 3/4 ton, manual trans, no power anything, no A/C, no carpets, a bench seat, 8ft box, 2wd and standard cab. Should run about 25K I would think at most. Nobody makes a simple plain truck anymore. Base line trucks come with too much junk on them.

So instead I'm thinking of buying a used older truck something like 67-72. I can find a relatively rust free one like I mentioned above cause they were common place back then.
Prices for a decent one are 10-15K. I can add better brakes and EFI along with fixing up some minor stuff for about 10K. All in I'd be less than 25K for a nice simple vehicle.

I'd bet it get as good as gas mileage as a new truck, should be able to get approx 20 mpg. Had a buddy back in the day with a '72 chevy 350 quadrajet, 4 speed that did 20mpg when driven easy.

It'll last me the rest of my lifetime and I won't need to go near a dealer. I feel like a need to get home and take a shower after visiting any dealership.

You can get the base one for 21K msrp. Trouble is its a ladies vehicle, you know auto trans, awd, extended cab and a bed less than 6ft long. Comes with all this computer touch screen crap too.

No thanks, the only reason I get a truck is for doing work stuff, if I wanted the other stuff a minivan makes more sense and is a better vehicle than a truck. Plus the wife already has a minivan so why get a girly man mall crawler truck?

Again. Not a 6ft bed. I want a real truck. Not a family hauler.

I really liked all the nice things on my dodge. Didn’t use the backup camera much but the heated seats and steering wheel felt nice after checking traps in negative temps. Bluetooth is a must in my vehicles, you can keep your crappy public radio stations. But we traded it for a suburban since our family outgrew the pickup.

My next truck is in the shop now getting worked on. Instead of buying new i told my dad to look out for an older cheap pickup I can beat up in the hills. He found a 2005 dodge 3/4 ton crew cab, it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles my other truck had, but it has Bluetooth and AC so that’s alright. Straight body, no rust. The guy selling it thought the motor was shot cause it ran rough when idling, got it for $1,000. Dad thinks it’s just a vacuum leak so he’s got a gasket kit ordered. We will see if that works. If not we have a spare motor for it layin around so we will just pop that one in and call it good.

If you don’t like having nice things, just buy an old truck and fix it

thats the point. They don't make a plain trucks anymore.

They make trucks geared for fat lazy people that need affirmation thru vehicle purchases. Oh, look my new truck has x, y and z, it has everything, I'm so weak of mind and soul that I can't go without. I gotta have it all.

As OP said for status, not work.

This guy gets it somewhat. I like nice quality stuff. Tools, furniture, guns to name a few. New vehicles don't do much for me. I have heated steering wheel and seats in my daily driver along with a whole mess of stuff new trucks don't come with like headlights that move with the steering wheel and adjust up and down with load. And know what, I don't use them at all. I'm not so soft that I need them. They are just more junk that fails eventually. I don't even use the A/C unless my wife is along, happy wife, happy life and all.

It would be nice to have to pay only for what you need and want when buying rather than getting all sorts of crap you don't want or need.

Your 2005 Dodge, while still too new for my taste has A/C, a crew cab and bluetooth and a host of other stuff I'll bet that I'd pass on myself. But the point is there, buy old, fix it up and have what you want. No worries about dents, scratches or payments. Its very liberating buying and driving older stuff when your not worrying about impressing the Jones. Alot cheaper too.

Oh, and by the way, my daily driver is a BMW, didn't buy it for a status symbol, bought it cause it was one of the very few station wagons still out there that came with a manual trans in it.

At least I got a manual box in it even if it did like most stuff available at the time come with all sorts of other junk I don't use.

This time round I'm looking more for what I want and I'm sure I'm going to have to look at older simpler stuff.

Around here A/C is not something you want to go without. It’s been over 100 degrees every day for weeks. I mean you could survive without it, and I have had vehicles without it before, but you’d think twice about driving anywhere between 10am and 8pm. For me, I want a good radio, AC, heater, cup holder and 4 wheel drive. Anything more than that is unnecessary but I’ll take it if I don’t have to pay extra for it.

I'd buy my 73 Ford 250 again, manual tran, roll up windows, no ac, didn't even have power steering....But it got 8 mpg, and shed rust like hair off a Labrador...

A basic truck would be great, or a Toyota diesel HiLux, but I'm not holding my breath.
