Had two steers delivered today took all of about 10 seconds for one to blow across the pen and through the brand new woven wire. He is now in about 1500 acres of timber..... wish me luck! I'm about to put this new horse to the test!

Good luck. I hope you get your steel back safely and quickly. If there's any other cattle in the area, it may try to get in with them, especially if it stays lost for a while.
I've gone on all the escaped cow hunts i ever want to. The worst hunt lasted 11 days and went from near Sydney, Ohio to near Covington, Ohio, a distance of a little over 28 miles, if you flew straight between the two and likely hundreds of miles as the scared, chased cow rambles. That cow was in it's new pasture about as long as your steer. That cow lost a few hundred pounds over the 11 days it was loose. My friend Dennis, who the cow belonged to and I, lost some weight too.
The best advice I can give to make it easier to retrieve a lost animal is to feed train all your livestock and domestic animals to a feed call. The call can be anything you want as long as it's consistent and you enthusiastically use it when making a production out of feeding your animals. Animals, like people, are food greedy and it makes even very dumb animals somewhat trainable with food.
For a few years, my friend James had serious problems with dead ash trees on his neighbors property falling on and smashing down his fence. His cows got out a lot. All of his cattle were trained to "Sook Cow!" and would come running if they ever heard you yell it. They would also follow if you carried a small amount of feed in a bucket, giving them the occasional mouthful. We walked them back from at least 4 miles on one occasion.
I have feed trained ducks, geese, quail, peafowl, guineas, chickens, pigeons, mice, rats, dogs, cats, goats, cattle, doves and pheasants to a feed call and it works on all them if they're loose, or if you just want to make it easier to catch them in a pen, or bring them in sight in a large pasture.

Had to chase a lot of em around here. The cows here are trained to a Grey f150 they get fed on. I can go thru the field on a silver f250 and they will look but not come running lol

A 12 or 20 ga pump shotgun works wonders on wayward beef or horses 7 1/2 or 8 shot will get its attention.
A good stock dog is helpful also .

My brother had a young Scottish highlander calf get out on him and disappeared for three months. One day he got a call from a farmer several counties away. Seems he's the only one with scottie in the area and this farmer knew it. Said three months on the run and it looked good.

I would check with the sheriffs department for sightings of your steer. We found Dennis's cow that way a few times. We just couldn't get a rope on it. It mostly stayed in thick woods and was hard to approach. People would report it when it was near roads and we would take off after it. It eventually found a herd of dairy cows and went in with them when the farmer opened the gate for it.
I hope you find your steed and can catch it.
Keith About 10 years ago I was deer hunting when late one afternoon I was sitting in my stand when a holsteen cow walked by about 40yards away surprised the heck out of me because I was several miles from any know farms deep in the northern Minnesota woods, reported it to the local sheriffs office, turned out it had been missing for over 2 years from a farm over 20 miles away, continued to see it now and then for a couple of years till some hunter shot it That thing was spooky as can be any little noise or movement and it would hit the deep brush and vanished
