Dirty D, I think most corporations have too many chiefs and not enough Indians. Never understood the concept. The bosses need several layers of fall guys under them. The fires reason is obvious to have somewhere to place blame other then then self. Second is justification of their pay rate see how many I'm in charge of it's a big job I should be paid more. The biggest problem is when a moron get in am user level. If your smart you like sharp people under you. When you're incompetent anyone sharp under you is a threat and you can't have that. So they stack management with morons.

Illegals don’t buy or need insurance so business projections are grim!

Layoffs are not always a bad thing. Depends upon who and why they are laying off.
I've seen manufacturing companies that had 3 or 4 office employees to every one production worker. Laying off half the work force in that situation if office employee is a good thing, will make the company more efficient, laying off production employees usually mean lack of work. My theory is that lots of people get promoted to middle management, but aren't good enough to move on up the chain. So after awhile there are twice as many people in management than needed. Then they thin the ranks and start over again.
