I think I might go see the doctor about getting tested for alpha gal. Has anyone here been affected by it? I love red meat but I just can't handle it anymore.

I know a few.
Some with coinfections of Lyme's and erlichosis.

This spring was the worse I have ever seen for ticks here.
Sprayed myself heavy and still a couple dug in, EVERY night!

( FWIW, I had undiagnosed Lyme's for a couple years 30 years ago,so I REALLY hate ticks.

This has been a great year here for poison ivy, poke weed, ticks, and rabbits. Not so great for people.

My wife has it. Her reactions started as just hives, but continually worsened toward anaphylaxis. Our primary protein had been almost exclusively bison. Now we eat a lot of poultry. Working on convincing her that fish isn’t as bad as she thinks.

I've had Alpha Gal for about 5 years. My problems are mainly G.I. related. Sweating, nausea, vomiting, numerous trips to the bathroom, etc. I haven't had any red (mammal) meat in years and I get my blood work updated every 6 months. My numbers are starting to go down and I hope to be in the clear to enjoy a steak again within the next year or so.

My wife has had it for 8 years. We made a few 2 am ER visits for her being in anaphylaxis. At that time alpha-gal was not well known and our local docs couldn't figure it out. We finally traveled to an allergy clinic where they diagnosed the alpha-gal. The reaction happens about 6 hours after you eat and it doesn't happen every time so challenging doesn't work. It's a strange thing.

One of my biggest fear is the disease you speak of. I am crazy about checking myself an kids after being out an about. Permithrin in hvy doses an keep your eyes peeled to your pants. Don't brush up against brush an stay far away from deer paths. I hate to hear of anyone allergic to red meat it's just awful to think of

I had problems with it a few years ago. I had terrible hives from my ankles up, by far the worst allergic reaction I had ever had. I was diagnosed at an allergy specialist, and stayed away from red meat with minimal problems. We are red meat eaters, butchering our own hogs and deer, it was quite a change. After about a year I started risking adding a little bit back into my diet, things like bacon bits on salad. I didn't have any ill effects so i experimented further, and now I can eat what I want again. I had a friend who had the same thing and his lasted for about five years, he now eats what he wants. It's not a life sentence in some cases, but it was easier for me to assume it would be, at the time. I would recommend getting used to fish and poultry then testing it a little as time passes. I wouldn't want to have to deal with it again, and hope you don't have to deal with it forever.

I'm surprised to hear of so many people here being affected by it but at the same time I am not surprised because of the lifestyle we live. I don't get the hives though thankfully mine is mostly g.i. related. I don't know how I'm going to live with out a ribeye here and there... I might just have to deal with the repurcussions!

I sure hope the west coast continues to stay relatively bug free.
A few mosquitos, and no-seeums are about all I ever want to deal with.
I don't know how you guys can put up with that stuff, I think I'd have to hibernate for the summer.

I have a friend who has it. He can tolerate a little red meat, but not much. Should call it something with Democrat in the name, because it screws your life up for about the same amount of time.
